🚀 Revolutionizing Mining with AI: A Path to Sustainability and Efficiency In our newly-released report on the Metro Vancouver region’s tech sector, we explore opportunity areas for AI in the region. A key finding: our region has an opportunity to lead the charge for more efficient and sustainable mining. Clean technology is poised to underpin a sustained boom in mining for critical minerals. AI and machine learning are powering mining technology for enhanced recovery of metals. Mines generate tons of data, and AI helps data-intensive industries glean its insights to reach better outcomes. Mining technology is an alluring opportunity in our region because: ⭐ Mining activity is abundant in BC. The combination of industry experience and technological expertise should ensure an emphasis on practical solutions with tangible real-world applications. ⭐ The industry urgently needs enhanced sustainability and efficiency. ⭐ Escalating global demand driven by the need for critical minerals to support the clean energy transition creates ample potential for export-driven growth. Firms in BC are already working on AI-driven mining solutions: ⭐ Hyperspectral Intelligence Inc. develops imaging technology for the mining and energy sectors, enabling precise rock analysis for safer and more efficient mining. Their cloud-based data processing offers real-time insights, enhancing sustainable resource extraction practices. ⭐ Ideon Technologies uses cosmic-ray muon tomography and artificial intelligence for subsurface imaging in mining. Their technology measures subatomic particles from supernovas to detect minerals and metals beneath the Earth’s surface, offering a sustainable and more efficient alternative to conventional exploration methods. ⭐ MineSense Technologies Ltd. leverages AI and machine learning in its technology to differentiate ore from waste in the mining process. Their system combines hardware and software, employing proprietary algorithms to analyze and report real-time data on ore grade and characteristics, thereby improving mining efficiency and decision-making. 🏠 To make housing affordable by 2030, the country needs an additional 3.5 million homes beyond the number expected under business-as-usual scenario, according to CHMC. AI could help us reach this ambitious goal. We all know the headlines: the region needs more housing, especially more affordable housing, to meet pent up demand from a growing population. The Metro Vancouver region could be at the leading edge of new construction techniques made possible with applied AI. No single solution will make housing plentiful and affordable, but new building methods might reduce the time required for construction and mitigate the shortage of skilled workers in the building trades. Why should we support the development of AI-integrated construction solutions in the region? 1️⃣ AI makes it possible to build more housing, more rapidly. ⌛ Faster is better because it helps bridge the gap between supply and demand that fuels rising prices. Longer construction periods escalate expenses which developers pass on to buyers. 2️⃣ AI makes it possible to build at a lower cost once the techniques achieve scale, despite the potentially higher upfront investment. 🏗️ Building techniques that use AI for routine and repetitive tasks will help make up for existing labour shortages in construction and make it possible to build more at a lower cost with increased efficiency, which should translate to a more affordable final product. 3️⃣ AI allows the region to carve out a niche in which it excels, potentially becoming an engine for economic growth and innovation. 🏆 The region is not alone in struggling to build housing, and there would be a substantial and growing export market for these technologies. AI-based technology will be integrated throughout the future of building construction: in design, in the permitting process, in scheduling the onsite work, and, increasingly, in the construction itself. Modular construction moves part of the construction into a factory, which allow the use of AI-controlled robots in a matter already familiar from the automated production lines in the motor vehicle industry. The big move will be applying AI at the construction site. UBC researchers have already designed AI-controlled drones that can help create a digital twin of the construction site. Using the digital twin, a separate AI system can safely control equipment, such as a crane, to autonomously unload and place large cement blocks. The same lab is working on autonomously controlled excavators and foresees moving on to equipment used throughout the building process. Integrating AI with health services and harnessing health data could improve patient outcomes and bolster the life sciences industry. Our health system faces constant pressure to deliver care that is faster, better, more accessible, and more cost-effective. Strategic experimentation with applied AI targeting patient outcomes could alleviate these pressures. In fact, there’s already a few shining star projects with potential in the Metro Vancouver region. Fraser Health Authority serves over 2 million people, from Burnaby to Fraser Canyon. The innovative use of predictive and prescriptive health analytics is driving improvements in health care access, delivery, and patient convenience. Recent AI-related innovations include: ⭐ Winning $1.5 million from SCALE AI | Canada's AI Global Innovation Cluster to collaborate with Deloitte Canada on an AI-driven physician-scheduling tool to forecast patient demand, which will improve the patient experience and reduce physician workloads. ⭐ Using Google Cloud Vertex AI and large language models that can learn policies and workflow processes to reduce clinicians’ administrative workloads by simplifying the clinical documentation process. ⭐ Deploying the “GI Genius” system for colon cancer screening, which assists medical teams by enhancing the accuracy of colonoscopy procedures through real-time, AI-assisted detection. Providence Health Care Ventures, a subsidiary of Providence focused on technology, aims to further the integration of frontier technology such as AI with the healthcare system through a collaborative and secure approach to improve patient outcomes: ⭐ Their Integrated Health Informatics Datalab (IHID) is one of Canada’s most advanced health data programs. This cloud-based system creates a secure research environment for companies by facilitating data integration while ensuring patient privacy with de-identification and strict controls. This boosts access to diverse datasets with reliable cost and timing for research firms, which is crucial for leveraging AI and machine learning to innovate and model outcomes. ⭐ AI allows Providence to enhance their operational efficiencies by applying machine learning on their data to optimize tasks, such as assigning mobile blood draws based on the layout and travel times within St. Paul’s Hospital. On a larger scale, AI could improve healthcare in BC and carefully managed and protected data could attract firms using AI to develop medical therapies. Our diverse population enhances the value of our patient data even further. Instead of conventional incentives like tax credits or grants, the province could use access to this invaluable data as part of a compelling value proposition for attracting investment and pharmaceutical firms. Let’s do a thought exercise together… Think of a random country in Europe. Can you name the third largest city in that country? More importantly, in that third largest city, can you name what their largest industries are? Unless you’re an expert on international business or the global economy, probably not. Which is good context for understanding why folks don’t necessarily think of our region — the third largest in what, to most, is a “random country” — as an investment destination in tech. To the extent that site selection is like a job search, many international tech firms have drawn up the interview list without ever having reviewed the Metro Vancouver region’s resume. Too often, the Metro Vancouver region is not at the forefront of international considerations when discussing possible investments and expansions. Toronto and Montreal overshadow the Metro Vancouver region and are themselves eclipsed by San Francisco and New York. So, that begs the question we’re asking today: Why not us? Developing an evidence-based strategy for investment attraction requires an understanding of how firms evaluate potential locations. Invest Vancouver engaged KPMG to connect with their global network of location experts and technology industry specialists, the people with firsthand experience of how companies make their decisions. The objective was to discover which factors have the most influence on locations decisions, and where the Metro Vancouver region fits in the expansion plans of multinationals in the technology sector. Despite current underrepresentation in global tech investment considerations, the Metro Vancouver region offers a compelling value proposition. Our region's talent, tech clusters, ROI, and business-friendly environment make it a hidden gem for investors. To attract more investment, key stakeholders need to work together to raise the Metro Vancouver region’s profile on the global stage. Read the article linked below for more on why the region is not on every investor’s radar… but we should be.
