This month’s front cover features IRISNDT performing Guided Wave Testing (GWT) on an in-service below ground, bitumen wrapped pipe work in a UK transportation and storage facility using a Wavemaker G4mini system from Guided Ultrasonics Ltd. (GUL) This is an advanced application for Guided Wave Testing as the protective bitumen wrapping on the pipe work results in data sets that are challenging to interpret due to high attenuation rates encountered. IRISNDT have over 20 years of GWT experience and operators that are specifically trained and certified in advanced GWT applications. IRISNDT have also successfully used GWT for the detection of corrosion under insulation (CUI) surveys in the refining, petrochemical and power generation industries on pipe sizes ranging from 2” up to 48” in diameter. The pipes under test are typically in-service and can be up to 350°C pipe surface temperature. The GWT method is sensitive metal loss defect mechanisms including erosion, corrosion and de-laminations regardless of their circumferential or through-thickness location.

IRISNDT Supporting the Drive – APVMA’s "Partnership for Strength" Charity Golf Tournament On July 30th, the APVMA (Alberta Pressure Vessel Manufacturers’ Association) held its annual golf tournament at the Innisfail Golf Course. IRISNDT participated by sponsoring one of the holes on the course. The hole was stocked with snacks, refreshments, and IRISNDT water bottles for the participants in the tournament and featured a corn hole challenge for a chance to win a hat. IRISNDT also entered a team to play in the event. The tournament raised over $12,000 to be donated to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. A beautiful day in a beautiful place, meeting collaborators in the pressure vessel industry and supporting a great cause!

Because of the rapid evolution of NDT (non-destructive testing), personnel in charge of pressure equipment reliability need constant updates to select the most appropriate NDT for the task at hand! The IRISNDT paper "In-Service Damage Mechanisms and the Non-destructive Examinations that Aid in Their Identification" addresses developments in several NDT techniques.
