Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs.

About us

Jane’s Walk is a series of free neighbourhood walking conversations that help put people in touch with their environment and with each other, by bridging social and geographic gaps and creating a space for cities to discover themselves. Since its inception in 2007, Jane’s Walk has grown internationally with over 500 cities taking part. Jane’s Walk honours the legacy and ideas of urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs who championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centred approach to planning. Jane’s Walk helps knit people together into a strong and resourceful community, instilling belonging and encouraging civic leadership. All Jane’s Walks are free. These walks are led by anyone who has an interest in the neighbourhoods where they live, work or hang out. They are not always about architecture and heritage and offer a more personal take on the local culture, the social history and the planning issues faced by the residents. Jane Jacobs believed strongly that local residents understood best how their neighbourhood works, and what is needed to strengthen and improve them. Jane’s Walks are meant to be fun, engaged and participatory - everyone’s got a story and they’re usually keen to share it.

Jane's Walk is seeking some new Steering Committee members - particularly a Treasurer. Although I'll sadly be stepping down from Steering Committee duties this year after 9 years, the team on the SC is super stellar. We are building a truly global SC these days as well, so don't let geography get in your way. No project under my belt has consistently given me so much joy than Jane's Walk. Find out why!

HR turned Urbanist - Liveable Cities and Inclusive Mobility | HR Business Partnering

Urbanist, Jane Jacobs once said, "Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody." This philosophy is at the heart of Jane's Walk, a global event held every May to celebrate Jane's legacy through community-led walking tours. These walks aim to explore the unique aspects of neighbourhoods, fostering community connections and encouraging discussions about urban living. 🌐 Since 2019, Kerja Jalan has been organising Jane’s Walk in various themes, discovering new perspectives on urban environments. This year, we had the opportunity to co-organise a walk with Women Of Will Malaysia, an NGO dedicated to empowering women through community initiatives. Together, we explored a Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) in Kg. Batu Muda, Sentul, with insights from the community group Sentul Then and Now. 📍 Interestingly, the first Jane’s Walk KL was in central Sentul and five years later, we were back at another part of Sentul! Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR), or People Housing Project, is a government resettlement program aimed at meeting the housing needs of low-income groups. It is similar to HDB flats in Singapore and council flats in the UK. PPRs are designed to provide affordable housing and essential amenities to create a sustainable living environment. 🏘 Women Of Will Malaysia, along with PPR community leaders and other urban groups, have done remarkable work in fostering a healthy environment with quality facilities for the 10,000 residents. We observed two community gardens run by women in the PPR, a community kitchen for alternative income and upskilling, a community hub, and other well-maintained facilities. Managing such a dense neighbourhood is challenging, but this PPR stands out as one of the highest quality in Malaysia. Kg. Batu and the Sentul area have a rich history, serving as crucial transportation hubs during the colonial era. Despite modern developments and multiple highways, their role in land transportation remains significant. The area is well-connected, with facilities such as KTM and MRT stations (Kg Batu), ensuring good accessibility. One of the highlights of our walk was the impressive facilities available for road users and residents, although we noted that some areas of improvement are necessary. The pedestrian and bike lanes from the stations to Batu Metropolitan Park are well-designed, passing through the PPR and providing a safe, shaded environment adjacent to Batu River. For more insights and updates on our walks, connect with us on Instagram: @kerjajalan. We look forward to sharing more stories and exploring urban environments together! 🚶♀️ 🚶♂️ 🚶♀️ 🚶♂️

Thrilled to be hosting our very first Jane's Walk this week with Kelsey Hubbell! Haven't registered yet? No sweat — RSVP at the link below, or simply join us for the walk! Jane Jacobs is our urbanist hero — throughout her life, Jacobs fought to alter the way in which city development was approached. By arguing that cities were living beings and ecosystems, she advocated ideas such as "mixed use" development and bottom-up planning. Join us for our walk in downtown Detroit to see the city through the perspective of Jane's ethos! https://lnkd.in/eNqKrM68

Urbanist, storyteller, community organizer & unifier.

I am very excited to co-lead a Jane's Walk next Wednesday, June 5th with Cities Reimagined! Jane was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. Her books and career have had a deep impact on my own work, philosophy, and values since I first read The Death and Life of Great American Cities in Professor Jeff Horner's Urban Studies class. Join me on Wednesday at 4:30 PM for a stroll through my hometown and first love, Detroit. If you'd like to listen to me talk for an hour and a half about my career, my (strong) opinions about downtown revitalization, and the inspiration behind it all (it wasn't just Jane!), this event is for you :) I would love to walk with you! RSVP: https://lnkd.in/g3gMdAW6

Some of China's major media have recently spotlighted Jane's Walk. Since its launch in 2019 in China, this series has unfolded 50 events across 10 Chinese cities and one international locale. #janeswalk #janejacobs “In China, the keyword is inclusivity. To that end, Chinese organizers have developed a creative toolkit, including roleplaying, meant to foster empathy toward different populations. “Locals, especially more privileged groups, sometimes hold stereotypes about what our city should be like,” Wang explains. “But this (Shanghai) is a global city and home to a diverse population. Newcomers and underrepresented local people have fresh perspectives that can enlighten us.” https://lnkd.in/gyMBGGHY
