Most people think that ageing in place means buying a bungalow. We think that ageing in place requires a host of beautiful design solutions that are sadly omitted from most homes. The interesting part is that a home designed for full accessibility works for all phases of our lives, whether we're children, parents managing children, or elders. For the twenty or so years of our lives in which we enjoy full mobility, vision, and hearing, an accessible home creates delightful experiences and possibilities. Imagine living in a home that's kinder to your body and your senses. We value extraordinary design and the creative discovery process that leads to it.
About us
At Kariouk Architects, we’re driven by a curiosity to uncover the distinctive subtleties, needs and nuances that reflect each of our unique clients. This intimate familiarity and awareness leads to wonderfully inventive outcomes – or as we like to call it – architecture with soul. With clients as far away as Malta and Manhattan, our work is by no means geographically-bound. In the same vein, it cannot be pegged as any one type or style of architecture. While many architecture firms pride themselves on having a trademark style that distinguishes them from their competition, Kariouk proudly stands behind the fact that we do not have any one look that identifies us as distinctly Kariouk. If anything, our trademark is that no two of our projects look the same. Because we tackle each creative undertaking with a new lens, our final results are always informed by an entirely different set of criteria and inspiration. It is deeply important to us that we fully understand the lives and needs of the people we work with. Whether it is a commercial or residential project – a new build or major renovation – it is an immersive and personalized approach that leads us to our best work – work that is intelligent, beautiful, meaningful and enduring.

Kariouk Architects specializes in the kind of creative problem solving that turns a house into a work of art you can inhabit. Sure, you could hire a firm to create a superficially customized version of the same home that everyone else has. But what if you want to ... - Live well on a tiny urban lot? - Preserve the variable landscape on your property? - Age in place with dignity? - Build more sustainably? - Use architecture to bring your family closer together? Great residential architecture should turn lifestyle problems into joyful solutions — that's what we strive for. Find out more: https://buff.ly/3NBLahH #Architecture #CustomHome #Art #Living

Thank you to Architizer for featuring our m.o.r.e. Cabin in your article, "Defying Gravity: 8 Electrifying Examples of Architecture on the Edge". The article features innovative structures that are designed to touch the land lightly, perch on cliffsides, or appear to float over water. All of them treat gravity not as a limitation but as an opportunity to push the possibilities of design and engineering. We're in great company with these innovative designs from countries like Spain, China, Australia, and Colombia. How do you create a home that balances privacy and connection, functionality and elegance, all within a compact footprint? The Chelsea Hill House is our answer — a design that thoughtfully addresses the needs of a single mother and her teenagers while embracing the beauty of its natural surroundings. The heart of the home is its double-height entryway and hallway, a vertical connection that unites the two floors and frames breathtaking views. While the interior feels light and open, the exterior tells a different story. Using modest industrial concrete blocks arranged in a playful pinwheel pattern, the façade becomes a statement of creativity and resourcefulness. This bold choice not only keeps the project within budget but also gives the home its distinctive character. The Chelsea Hill House exemplifies our commitment to creating spaces that are as thoughtful as they are beautiful. It’s a home where every detail serves a purpose, where boundaries blur between family life and the natural world, and where design transforms limitations into opportunities. We are thrilled to share that our m.o.r.e. Cabin has been recognized by Yahoo as one of the top 12 treetop homes worldwide in their article, "12 of the Best Treetop Homes Around the World"! 🏡🌳 This cantilevered cabin, perched among the treetops in Québec, shows how we can build to be in better harmony with nature. Designed to float 65 feet above the ground, m.o.r.e. Cabin minimizes its environmental footprint with a single steel mast, low-waste cross-laminated timber panels, and a prefabricated structure that was assembled offsite to protect the delicate hillside ecosystem. Inside, the cabin is filled with light and space, with vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a floor plan that transitions seamlessly from shared living spaces to private retreats. Amazingly, it achieves this feeling of spaciousness using only 960 square feet of living space (and sleeps six people... plus dogs). 📷 Fans of contemporary infill housing: we're pleased to announce that we have added more photos to the Sorelle House gallery! These new images were taken by Gordon King for Our Homes Ottawa — thanks to Gordon for his kind permission to use them. A big part of what makes the Sorelle house special for us is that it combines two small homes on one tiny lot — but when you're in them, each one feels large. They also offer their residents the opportunity to age in place with dignity in the neighbourhood they love. Enjoy: https://buff.ly/41nsNmk #Ottawa #Contemporary #Architecture #Infill #Housing #InfillHousing #Densification #SmartDensification

We are honored to see one of our homes featured in an article exploring the profound significance of home and the need to revolutionize how we build. A home is far more than walls and a roof — it's a space where identity, memories, and dreams take root. It’s a physical and emotional sanctuary, a reflection of who we are, and a vital part of our collective future. This article by Andrea Staid beautifully explores how homes can be reimagined to meet practical needs while embracing sustainability, biodiversity, and a deeper connection to the world around us. As architects, we strive to create spaces that are not only functional but transformative, enriching the lives of those who inhabit them. We’re proud that one of our designs is part of this important conversation about the role of home in shaping both individual lives and our shared environment.
