The community foundation of Canada’s most populous city has been crowned the country’s most equitable funder, according to a new ranking project by Future of Good. “I’m gobsmacked,” said Sharon Avery, Toronto Foundation's CEO. “We did not expect to be near the top. It’s wonderful.” To produce the ranking, Future of Good and QuakeLab analyzed data from Canada’s 500 largest foundations by asset size based on seven criteria, including action on DEI, transparency, and funding practices. In the ranking, the Toronto Foundation, a community foundation with about $760 million in assets, narrowly outranked the Laidlaw Foundation, a Toronto-based family foundation, and the Calgary Foundation, one of Canada’s largest community foundations. 🎉 Introducing our 2024 IYCFF grantee, 13 Moons Land-Based Learning. This group uses the 13-moon cycle 🌙 and land-based learning 🌳 to teach about Oneida culture, develop practical skills (such as hunting and cooking), and foster connections with nature. Their holistic approach promotes physical and mental health 🧘♀️🧠, emotional well-being ❤️, and spiritual development. This initiative provides a healing journey for the Oneida people and their allies by reconnecting them with traditional teachings, knowledge, and values. A key focus is on revitalizing the Oneida language, aiming to grow from our current ten fluent speakers.

Introducing The Wolverines, recipients of the 2023 IYCFF grant. 🐺 This dedicated group has created a nurturing environment for Indigenous youth to explore and appreciate the natural world. Participants learned essential traditional survival skills, including building fires and hunting. They also gained knowledge in harvesting plants and assisting elders with tasks like cleaning hides. Additionally, the program emphasized the art of beading and other traditional crafts, enriching the cultural experience for all involved. 🌳 🔥
