As the regulatory body for lawyers in NL, the Law Society regulates the practice of law & the legal profession.

About us

The Law Society is fully funded by lawyers who are required to pay various fees in order to practice. The Law Society serves the public interest by promoting a high standard of legal services and professional conduct and by ensuring that its method of regulation is dynamic and responsive to the challenges of a changing profession. The Law Society may act as an advocate on issues that affect the public interest in the practice of law. The Law Society offers public services such as: -A law library that provides members of the public with free access to legal resources; -A comprehensive online directory with lawyer contact information; -A program that receives and responds to allegations about lawyers; and -An Assurance Fund which helps clients who have lost money because of the misappropriation or conversion of funds or property by a lawyer. Together, we strive to ensure that lawyers are providing the highest quality of service to the public by establishing best practice standards, providing educational opportunities, supporting public access to legal information and advice, providing access to research, and encouraging and facilitating lawyers’ participation in pro-bono legal clinics.

  • The S.S. Daisy Legal History Committee invites you to a dramatic reading of Leviathan Unbound: Currie et al. v. Macdonald et al., a play by John Joy. This compelling work revisits a pivotal 1934 legal case in which six members of Newfoundland’s House of Assembly and Legislative Council challenged the legitimacy of the National Convention and confederation referendum. This historic case ultimately sought a court declaration deeming the actions of the Governor and Commissioners of Government unconstitutional. This complimentary production provides a unique glimpse into a crucial moment in Newfoundland's legal history. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this powerful story, taking place on 20 November 2024. #LegalProfession #LegalHistory #NLLegalHistory #LawyersofNL #NLLegalProfession

  • The Land Titles Committee has developed guidelines on “good title” in the province. After extensive research and consultation, the Committee has presented a report titled What is Good Title?: 2024. This report outlines the Committee’s interpretation of standards of good title and highlights changes in both jurisprudence and government policies since the What is Good Title? report presented by the Joint Committee on Continuing Legal Education in 1990. While the materials are intended to assist in the exercise of professional judgment, they are not determinative. It is important to remain up to date on new developments in the law, including policy developments affecting their areas of practice. https://lnkd.in/dFWiMhRw #RealEstateLaw #PropertyLaw #LawyersofNL #LegalProfession
