Don't just take my word for the power of improv to unite teams. See what the Harvard Business Review has to say about it.

"In improv...whether people are building a scene or telling a story, everyone has a chance to talk. Members’ contributions are welcomed and valued, and participants collaborate and support one another as they work toward a common goal. Getting everyone involved in this way is important: When we discuss each other’s ideas and perspectives, we learn from them and our decisions improve. Plus, the more we feel that others value our contributions, the more likely we are to share our ideas." - Francesca Gino, Harvard Business Review https://lnkd.in/gWcf5Pba

Let's do a little demystifying. What IS applied improv anyway?

I get it, the word improv can be intimidating but applied improv doesn't need to be scary. If you're not sure what applied improvisation is and isn't. If you're not sure how applied improvisation can benefit your team. If you're curious about applied improvisation. Here's a handy two minute explainer to get you started. And if that has you even more curious, DM me to arrange a FREE 30 minute call to explore further. lightswitchconsulting.ca

The journey to get past imposter syndrome.

Previously I struggled to convince myself that my employment experiences could be seen as relevant to my work creating and facilitating applied improv workshops with teams. Then someone at a conference listened to my list of experiences and told me they were all reasons he WOULD choose to trust and work with me. Mentally it was a game changer for me. Now I own my experiences as my strengths and my point of difference. So yes, I was a wholetime firefighter with Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service, UK. It was an experience that taught me: 🚒 there's a time to follow procedures strictly and there's a time to improvise 🚒 trying to teach by punishing mistakes is often unproductive and breeds fear 🚒 just one disillusioned person on a team can initiate a toxic environment if left unchecked 🚒 what it feels like to truly work under life or death pressure 🚒 the difference between working in a happy team versus a dysfunctional one 🚒 that the best leaders I worked under did not rule through fear or threats but through effective two-way communication 🚒 how it feels to not have a voice or the space to be authentic 🚒 that employees who feel undervalued will quickly become unmotivated and do the minimum needed And also, that driving a fire truck at speed, through traffic, with blue lights and sirens going can be a lot of fun!

If you've got something to say, you might as well learn how to say it effectively. Let me show you how.

"Phil's public speaking course was scary, but in a good way!" Getting this feedback for a 'Public Speaking and Presenting' workshop meant so much to me. For workshop participants to feel comfortable in being uncomfortable means I've created the environment to learn and grow. When the step that challenges the boundary of their comfort zone is taken with the support of the group and the knowledge that if they fall we will collectively catch them. To see realtors, local politicians, retail owners, authors, business managers and high schools students realize that the same things are scary for all of them and watch them tackle them together was a joy for me. I love teaching this workshop. DM me to find out how I can help you and your team grow your public speaking skills because we all have something to say, so you might as well say it effectively. https://lnkd.in/dqAfq47J

Lightbulb moments from improv and horses.

Yesterday I got to hug a horse (a real one, not the one in the photo AKA my dad circa 1978) and it made my day. And helped me discover the overlap between the learning potentials of equine assisted learning and applied improv. I accompanied a friend and his daughter to the Little Oasis Equine Therapy centre in Casino, BC. As we walked alongside Kip, the horse taking Mika on her weekly ride, the owner started explaining how they use equine work with at risk groups, corporate teams and couples on date nights. Their focus on how you approach the horse, communicate with the horse, ask the horse, thank the horse and, more than anything, your intention towards the horse was fascinating and familiar. As we chatted we found the crossover in our methods of helping teams be more creative, listen to each other, collaborate and overcome their fears. We noted the lightbulb moments that both a horse and an improv exercise can provide. Often the same lightbulb moment as it turns out. And at the end Kip let me hug him and give him chin scratches. And then followed after me and nudged me for more when I moved away. What could I do but say yes, and give him some more! New Year... New Choice There's a fun applied improv exercise 'New Choice' which is great for playing at the start of a new year and a time of change. Participants are faced with a question or challenge which they give an answer to. After giving their answer they're given the instruction "New choice" and they reply with the first alternative answer they think of. No answer is wrong! Repeated multiple times this challenges the individual or group to find alternative solutions and explore beyond their standard, rehearsed, narrow view answers to playfully discover the hidden gems hiding in the world of possibility. Let's play. My question to you this January is...   How are you going to tackle your team challenges this year? (Answer) New choice. (Answer) New choice. (Answer) New choice.   If you found the answer 'Playfully, with LightSwitch Consulting' then click the link below or send me a DM and let's get started.   Wishing you a playful and exploratory 2024! https://lnkd.in/eZz6Cmjq

My love of blending intelligence and silliness, and my subsequent career doing just that, is rooted in a family Christmas tradition which started in the 1970s - the Christmas anagram. Rather than the usual 'Merry Christmas' my wordplaying, cryptic crossword loving parents would hang 'Sherry Crammits' (or sometimes 'Cherry Marsmits') in the living room when the decorations went up. Thinking outside the circle of expectation and finding inspiration in the world of possibility. Confusing for guests at first we eventually started to receive Christmas cards from friends and family wishing us 'Sherry Crammits'. Now that's a 'Yes, and...' mindset! I inherited those special letters in 2013 and they still get pinned up at home. On behalf of LightSwitch Consulting let me be the first to wish you... Sherry Crammits 2023!

The Basin Food FABX expo this weekend gave me the opportunity to play and discover with an incredible range of people invested in the food systems of the Columbia Basin. Growers, retailers, researchers, economists, distributors, professors and many more put their egos to one side and allowed a playful approach to finding ways to collaborate, creatively explore potential new solutions and find out what each other REALLY does beyond a job title and how it relates to their own role. I also had the pleasure of the session being graphically recorded by Lisa Gates from Insightful Ink, providing the participants and me with a wonderful visual takeaway and reminder of the mindsets we had explored together. #basinfood #lightswitchconsulting #appliedimprov #collaboration
