Link North and the TEDC worked together to support Mattagami Heights Farm with improving profit margins and productivity, increasing storage capacity, and product diversification. The TEDC assisted with accessing SNAPP funding, and along with Link North’s BOOST funding we supported the purchase of “cackellacs” – mobile units to shelter and feed chickens – and a mobile walk-in freezer to significantly increase the quantity of product brought to the abattoir per trip. Link North’s BOOST program provides 50% funding up to $10,000 to support businesses with product development, scaling and growing operations. During our farm and agriculture tour last week, we visited Acres of Dreams and explored their two properties. The first location is home to their chickens, turkeys, and Schmidt’s Honey production. The second location is dedicated to raising pigs from farrow to hog. Link North’s BOOST program supported Acres of Dreams with developing and growing sales in Wawa, Marathon, Kapuskasing, and Kirkland Lake. BOOST provided funding toward the purchase of equipment to double their food storage capacity for bringing product to farmer’s markets in northern Ontario. Link North’s BOOST program provides 50% funding up to $10,000 to support businesses with developing in new markets, integrating new technologies and modernizing operations, and product diversification. Have you heard of a cackellac? It’s known as the cadillac of chicken tractors! We helped Mattagami Heights Farm secure SNAP funding and Link North BOOST funding to purchase this unit! The cackellac gets moved to fresh grass everyday. City of Timmins Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology #dairy #farming #agriculture #economicdevelopment #innovation

We’re up and at ‘em on a local farm and agriculture tour today! First stop, Haasen Farms Limited. They started as a family run dairy farm in 1958. They built a 120 cow, 2 robot barn in 2012 after a fire destroyed the heifer barns, milk parlor and milk house. HFL farms ~700 acres of systematically drained land, growing 400+ acres of alfalfa based mixed hay and 100 acres each of barley, canola and peas. They ship about 3500 litres of milk a day. That works out to about 1.27 million litres a year! Marcel started Rubber Boot Farm with only 20 chickens as a way to get back on his feet after breaking his back in 2015. Since then, the farm has expanded their offerings. They now have pigs, ducks, rabbits and an orchard with apples, pears, plums and lilac, with more in the works! Marcel cuts his own meat after inspection and partners with various local farms and businesses including Grey Wolf Gardens, Radical Gardens and Aline’s Tea Shop. We helped them acquire 8 Cackellacs and a walk-in freezer with Link North BOOST funding.
