BCWWA is putting on a virtual course on Water Rights Basics for Groundwater Users in British Columbia - Virtual Classroom on Friday, November 8, 2024. This 6-hour course (developed by myself) is not only beneficial to water supply system operators but also to administrators, trustees, and contractors and consultants working with water wells and groundwater supplies in BC. Improved knowledge and awareness of water rights = improved operation & sustainable use of the groundwater resource. The course is worth 0.6 CEUs with the Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) or 6 hours with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (EGBC). Please help me promote this course (https://lnkd.in/gJPqxsND).

Water is essential to the health of ecosystems and communities, yet freshwater sources are facing a plethora of challenges. Understanding these issues is crucial to driving meaningful change. To support this, Living Lakes Canada has launched a Learning Centre, which provides valuable resources on climate change impacts, water conservation, ethical nature photography and more. As climate change concerns grow, many young people in Canada are grappling with climate distress and anxiety. According to a 2023 study published in the Journal of Climate Change and Health, 56% of youth respondents in Canada feel afraid, sad, anxious, and powerless in the face of climate change, with 78% reporting that it affects their overall mental health. Last year, we hosted a panel with Yukon youth to explore their perspectives on water stewardship and discuss strategies for managing climate anxiety. This compelling video, illustrated by graphic recording artist Esther Bordet, distills key insights from those conversations. #ClimateAnxiety #ClimateAction #YouthMentalHealth

Earlier this year, we announced Living Lakes Canada as the first recipient of our Sleeman Better Water Fund. They’re using this $40,000 grant to collaborate with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, partners, and individuals to protect Canada's freshwater resources. This year, our employees took part in a Lake Photo Challenge hosted by Living Lakes Canada and Sleeman Breweries. The goal was to show appreciation for Canadian Lakes and to help bring attention to the challenges they face. The results were stunning! Take a look at some of the incredible photos our employees submitted. #EmployeursVerts #ChezSleeman #LacsCanadiens

Polls show that B.C. residents are concerned about climate change and its impacts. But without political will and sustained funding, crucial watershed security initiatives like Living Lakes Canada’s community-based water and climate monitoring network in southeastern BC risk becoming stranded assets, leaving their full potential untapped. In our latest OpEd leading up to the 2024 BC election, we discuss why watershed security is an election issue and why investing in watershed security is essential for B.C.’s future: https://ow.ly/y8FI50TLYyM #BCElection #BCPoli #WatershedSecurity #BCWatersheds

Curious to see if your local candidates in next week’s election have signed the non-partisan Watershed Security Pledge organized by the BC Watershed Security Coalition? Check the pledge tracker page, which lists all the candidates in the 2024 BC Election and indicates whether they’ve signed it or not. By signing the Pledge, candidates agree to being a champion for Watershed Security in British Columbia by advocating for: ✔️provincial actions that enhance local watershed management and partnerships that unite people to develop solutions that benefit everyone ✔️ increased funding for Watershed Security to equip local people with the jobs, tools and resources to restore their local watersheds. You can select “say thank you” or “request to sign” next to a candidate’s name and the system will automatically generate emails to the candidates in your riding. Help make the health of B.C. watersheds an election priority! https://lnkd.in/gu59bxzw
