On this World Mental Health Day, we asked our M&M International team to share how they prioritize mental well-being while juggling tasks during a work day. It's beautiful how their answers revealed the importance of physical movement, dogs, giving back to the community and engaging with art in our lives — all things non-negotiable! 💚 With meditation Martha Asselin manages stress, remains calm and gains a new and deeper perspective. 🧘🏻♀️ She finds that having flexibility of work space and time really allows her to prioritize her own wellbeing. Being able to bring Bennie to the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) co-working space brightens up Sarah McCarthy and our day! 🥹🫶🏼 The two also volunteer with St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dogs, allowing Sarah time to give back in a meaningful way. This balance between work and personal passions positively impacts her productivity and well-being. In addition to poetry, Ameesha Rana finds great solace in writing in her journal, striking up conversations with her sister and working out, to clear her head. 🌸 We hope you prioritize your mental health all day, everyday! Consequently, it becomes imperative that these thoughtful committed citizens are engaged when helping raise funds for your mission at all times. A few things that help when thinking of volunteer engagement are: ‣ Ensure their roles and responsibilities align with their skills and interests. ‣ Acknowledge their contribution. ‣ Celebrate their milestones together. ‣ Create opportunities for mentorship. ‣ Provide resources that add more value to their work.  ‣ Support them so that they feel they get to learn and be better at their job. ‣ Provide leadership roles and opportunities  ‣ Create an environment  where volunteers feel involved and appreciated.  ‣ Create community through events and gatherings.  ‣ Share how they’re collectively making a difference by sharing impact stories. ‣ Listen to their experiences and seek feedback. #VolunteerEngagement #ThoughtfulCitizens #CommittedToChange #NonprofitsAndVolunteers

While Marlie considered passion vital to fulfill purpose, she recognized that it wasn’t enough if she wanted to further the environmental movement. She needed transferable, tangible skills to take action. In 2016, Marlie joined the M&M International team, where she gained three key skills that would help her grow as an environment leader— fundraising, leadership and knowledge of today’s most pressing environmental challenges. She found the space to learn and demonstrate her passion and commitment for the environment alongside M&M International’s Managing Director, Martha Asselin, an ardent environment advocate herself. “Martha is an inspiring leader, and an incredible mentor. I learned a lot watching how she leads people and projects,” says Marlie. IRCOM - Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba Inc. is an organization in Winnipeg doing critical work supporting Canadian newcomers with three-year transitional housing and wrap-around support programs like, literacy classes, job skills, childcare and more.   At IRCOM, the staff goes above and beyond to support newcomers like Aadila, who fled Afghanistan and moved into their community this summer. When Nahla, their Family Settlement Coordinator, and Aida, their Life Skills Worker, discovered that Aadila was struggling—disoriented, suffering from stomach pain, and dealing with severe tooth pain—they knew they had to act. Nahla and Aida walked alongside Aadila, helping her navigate her new life in Winnipeg. From practicing her route to English classes to accompanying her to the doctor and finding a low-cost dentist, they ensured she wasn't alone in her journey. Here's what she has to say: "We’ve found that when creating a fund development plan for a nonprofit organization, circling back to your Missional or Strategic Plan is always fruitful. Setting out annual fundraising goals that support your broader organizational objectives means that your mission remains the foundation of your fundraising efforts. Diversifying funding sources, including major donors, corporate giving, and grants are essential for a fund development plan. But aligning your strategies to attract and retain donors with your mission in mind is what really does the trick. Don’t stop there though. Review and adjust these strategies to ensure they stay aligned with any changes in organizational goals or the external environment. Marlie Whittle always had a heart for environmental protection. 🌱 But her path to becoming an environmental change maker evolved gradually. Like many people, Marlie was aware of the man-made destruction taking place in our natural world. However, it wasn’t until she worked as a tree planter, reforesting lands devastated by resource extraction, that she realized the magnitude of the problem. All around her, once-lush forest was reduced to rock-hard dirt. Despite the slim odds of reviving the land, Marlie and her team persisted in planting trees. 🙌🏼 This experience highlighted for Marlie the severe and irreversible impacts of human actions on the environment. Unable to ignore the urgent need for change, Marlie felt compelled to intensify her environmental advocacy efforts. Today, Marlie is doing just that as the Associate Director of Philanthropy at Ecojustice Canada, Canada’s largest environmental law charity. A well-organized and strategic fundraising plan is critical for success. Yet many nonprofits might overlook its importance when they have volunteers, a host committee and some donor meetings. Once you have a plan, it will become your go-to when referring to the fundraising calendar, when you need guidance on a strategy or when you need to redirect your time and energy into the most fruitful strategies. In short, it will help you get to your mission with more ease. 💪🏽 As overwhelming as a fundraising plan may seem, here are a few non-negotiables that will guide you in the right direction when starting out: 🎯 Annual fundraising goal: How much money does your organization need to continue bringing your mission to life? 🌱 Your mission: Too often the mission and the ‘why’ behind your fundraising efforts gets buried under everything else. Reiterate your mission. Lay it in the foundation of your fundraising plan. 📈 Tactics/Strategies: The ‘how’ of the plan is as important as the ‘why’. Spending time on a strategy that isn’t the right fit for your mission won’t bring about any results. Think about major donors, events, direct mail, grants, online giving, multi-year gifts, events and individual giving. ⏳ Timeline: A sticky spot for many nonprofits, the timeline can often be the setback in your fundraising efforts. A critical path involving dates for the above-mentioned strategy will keep the ball rolling and make your mission more tangible.
