Bonds once built the world, now they have the opportunity to rebuild it. I heard the above quote last week, where I had the pleasure of representing Mackenzie at the PRI in Person conference. There are few events which bring together world-leading institutional investors, asset owners, and industry pioneers with the magnitude of the PRI in Person conference, as it returns to Canada for the first time in a decade. It was a landmark showing with the Canadian investment landscape front and center as we reflect upon how to not only decarbonize our portfolios, but the planet. As 2024 continues to reflect a year of change, heralded both through circumstance, witnessing a devastating volume of extreme weather events, and through choice, as the world witnesses its largest ballot of elections in history; the world is changing rapidly and summits like these remind us of the role we can play in shaping it. From leaders in fiscal policy such as Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, to former Bank of Canada Governor, Mark Carney, the presence of thought leadership both domestic and international was inspiring. Whether from the plenary session stage to 1:1 conversations over dinner, there were countless stories shared and lessons learned on how we as investors will enable a just transition. In a busy week spanning not only professionally with PRI, but also personally with Canadian Thanksgiving and birthday festivities – I was lucky to be surrounded by friends and family from many countries and continents. As we aspire to build a world that is deserving of our children and loved ones, remember that today’s action or inaction will have presently unseen consequences; creating a ripple effect seen across the planet and throughout time to come. Thank you to the members of my Fixed Income Team for your continued leadership, our Sustainability Team for your exceptional insights, and our Marketing team for bringing such a momentous event to life; I have never been more optimistic towards the future of Sustainable Investment than I am today.

🌍 Exciting Times in #Toronto! 🌍 This past week, Toronto proudly hosted the world’s leading responsible investment conference, the UN-convened Principles for Responsible Investment. We at Mackenzie Investments were deeply honoured to be selected as the lead partner of this prestigious event. This recognition underscores our unwavering commitment to sustainability and responsible investing. Our president and CEO, Luke Gould, set the tone with his inspiring opening remarks, emphasizing our collective progress and the importance of transparency. The conference theme, “Progressing Global Action,” was brought to life by Chrystia Freeland, who announced the federal government’s new commitments for a Canadian-built green and transition taxonomy. This is a significant step forward in our journey towards a sustainable future. We were privileged to hear from global thought leaders who highlighted the critical need for policy action and leadership. Their message was clear: don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good. David Atkin left us with a powerful reminder: “We go further when we travel together.” This resonates deeply with me, as I am continually inspired by these significant events where we unite to tackle the most pressing issues of our time. #PRIinPerson #Sustainability #ResponsibleInvestment #GlobalAction

With the world's leading responsible investment conference, #PRIinPerson, concluding last week in Toronto, we would like to thank the organizers for providing the opportunity to connect PRI signatories, global responsible investment leaders and institutional investors. We also thank Arup Datta, Head of the Mackenzie Global Quantitative Equity Team, for participating in the insightful panel discussion on utilizing #sustainability to generate alpha. As a Principles for Responsible Investment signatory, we are encouraged by the collaborative and engaging discussions around progressing global action in sustainable investing. We will continue our commitment to advancing sustainable investment best practices while advocating for greater disclosures and transparency.

The shift toward deglobalization is partially influenced by environmental considerations, and Canada can profit from the transition to greener, cleaner, friendlier economies, according to an executive at Mackenzie Investments. Benoit Gervais, the senior vice-president of investment management and the portfolio manager and head of Mackenzie Resource Team, identified a “cap on globalization” in an interview with Sustainable Biz Canada. He anticipates globalization will decline in the next five years, accelerated by the Ukraine-Russia war and greater emphasis on domestic production. “We’ve got several things intertwined here. We’ve got climate action, we’ve got onshoring for strategic reasons, not just ESG reasons, and the infrastructure to support all of this.” #climate #economy #globalization #Canada #cleanenergy https://lnkd.in/eyzu88Fj

In 2014, Mackenzie Investments signed on to the Principles for Responsible Investment. A decade later we’re thrilled and honoured to be the lead sponsor of PRI in Person, Toronto! As I addressed the audience, I reflected on our commitment to sustainability which is rooted in our core values of responsibility, active ownership and transparency, with PRI as our guiding star. It’s been so energizing to see sustainable investing leaders and PRI signatories come together in Toronto to collaborate on the most pressing challenges and opportunities to progress global action in sustainable investing. There’s an urgency for continued progress and capital markets must continue to play a crucial role in driving a sustainable future. Shifting to a more sustainable world must involve everyone. I hope you join us.

🌱 Our employees had the opportunity to dive deep into Canada’s Next Sustainable Changemaker Challenge, a competition for Canadian start-ups to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems. This year’s theme focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and helping Canada achieve its net-zero goal. We were truly impressed by the finalists and their ground-breaking companies. Congratulations to grand prize winner Aruna Revolution and runner ups CERT Systems and NANOSentinel Technologies! A special thanks to Elevate for partnering with us to bring this exciting competition to life and to Lindsey Walton, CFA, PRM for enlightening us on the crucial role asset management companies play in driving sustainable change.
