In episode three of The Pension Blueprint, available today, I had the opportunity to sit down with Mark Baxter, Jon Reid and Connie Dejak ICD.D. We discussed the importance of supporting Ontario’s first responders, many of whom are OMERS members, because we know that due to the challenging nature of their work protecting our communities, they experience a higher rate of work-related stress or trauma, including post-traumatic stress injuries (PTSIs).  Runnymede Healthcare Centre is working to improve access to the unique mental health supports our first responders may need in their journey to mental wellness and recovery. On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, let’s pause to honour the survivors of the residential school systems and their families and communities. Let’s also reflect on the tragedy of so many never returning home. Together, we must acknowledge our shared history, learn from it and build a better tomorrow   Reconciliation requires action – our Indigenous Peoples Alliance helps us do that. This year, they organized a Beaded Orange Heart Workshop. Led by Siera Hancharyk, an Aanishnabe-kwe artist and teacher, alongside beadwork artists Joy Rogers and Skye Paul, this workshop beautifully blended education with creativity.   While learning about beadwork, 40+ of our employees gained a deeper understanding of Orange Shirt Day, Treaties and the proper ways to address Indigenous Peoples.   Miigwetch to our wonderful artists and our Indigenous Peoples Alliance, led by Executive Sponsor Michael Kelly and Community Co-Chairs Sam Butwell and Susan L.

At such a complex time for investors, the role of Chief Sustainability Officer continues to evolve and grow in importance. Last week, I had a very interesting conversation on this subject with Bertrand Millot, Head of Sustainability at Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), and Alanna Boyd, Chief Sustainability Officer at Sun Life, moderated by Responsible Investor’s Gina Gambetta.   Sustainability has become a C-Suite and board-level concern, with issues that fall under its umbrella rapidly expanding to bring new challenges and opportunities. Harmonized disclosure is becoming imperative for global investors, and we continue to advocate for it alongside our peers as part of our collaborative approach to sustainable investing.   We all agreed that in addition to working together for greater influence, strategic thinking and innovation will drive sustainability initiatives. The CSO needs to be a true thought partner, distilling complex issues into strategic options for our executive committees and boards.   One of the great things about this role is that it involves continuous progress and learning. To that end, I would like to thank my co-panelists for their insights and Responsible Investor for hosting this valuable event.
