Caring for people who are unhoused is a core part of the mission at Unity Health Toronto—a value that informs research, education, outreach and clinical care. Today, on World Homeless Day, take a look at some of the network's recent research and outreach on homelessness. Homelessness is associated with substantial excess health care costs, according to new research led by Lucie Richard & Dr. Stephen Hwang, researchers at St. Michael's Hospital's MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions. Springer Nature https://lnkd.in/gpsu9Pgr 15% of the homeless population in Toronto is over the age of 55, but there are few programs available to support vulnerable older adults with housing and mental health concerns. A 4-year pilot program at St. Michael’s aims to fill this gap. https://lnkd.in/ghk-TbRz Moss Park has the lowest life expectancy in Toronto at 74.8 years. Homelessness is a key contributor to that low lifespan. Torontonians' life expectancy varies significantly by neighbourhood, according to a first-ever neighbourhood analysis by St. Michael's Hospital's MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions and The Local Magazine.
