I am happy and proud to share that my favourite chapter of my PhD thesis has been published in RCR. In this paper, I propose a decentralized filtration column to be installed under a urinal or No-mix toilet. This innovative WRRF can inhibit urea hydrolysis, due to the existence of Na-chabazite, and recover nitrogen as urea with biochar. This work could not be completed without Xavier Foster. I remember our high five after confirming Na-chabazite can play a role as urea hydrolysis inhibitor at BioEngine Lab. I learnt a lot of chemistry during our work together. I wanna give my special thanks to Hossein Kazemian for providing me valuable biochar and zeolite samples and generously giving me suggestions to improve this paper. Also I really appreciate Prof. Kaliaguine and his student Igor for helping me with the biochar surface modification. Last but not least, I feel grateful for the freedom that my dear PhD supervisor Céline Vaneeckhaute ♻️💦💩 allowed me in my research. This paper is different from the original PhD proposal. Yesterday, at the MATTER team office, we celebrated Dorna Sobhani's birthday! 🎉 Dorna, now a proud MATTER Alumni, is also the Northern Analytical Lab Services at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) Quality Assurance Officer and Project Manager. She has been a key member of our lab, contributing immensely to our projects, and we couldn't be prouder of her journey. Seeing her transition from a valued MATTER team member to an integral part of NALS is a testament to her dedication and the incredible impact she has had on the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) community. I was honored to present at today's Pacific Energy Innovation Association (PEIA) Energy Breakfast Meeting alongside Aldyen Donnelly is a co-founder and Director of Carbon Economics at Nori, Hélène Thibieroz, CEO of RainIons, one of our industrial partners at the Northern Analytical Lab Services at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and MATTER_Lab@UNBC at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Our discussion highlighted the innovative work RainIons is doing with their patented coating technology that captures CO₂, NOₓ, and other pollutants from hydrocarbon exhaust sources. This scalable solution is a potentially significant step forward in reducing air pollution and combating climate change. We are excited to announce that Northern Analytical Laboratory Services (NALS) at University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) has initiated a promising collaboration with the Ant Lihlx Lax'yip Stewardship Society. Following a productive technical meeting with Jason Koldewijn and Len Combs, we explored numerous ways in which NALS can support their ongoing and future environmental stewardship projects—Covering a wide range of activities, including soil sampling and analysis, water quality assessments, and environmental remediation and reclamation projects. This partnership represents a significant step towards fostering environmental sustainability and stewardship in the Northern BC's Region. By leveraging our state-of-the-art facilities and expertise at NALS, along with the resources of the MATTER_Lab@UNBC, we aim to provide comprehensive support to the invaluable work being conducted by Ant Lihlx Lax'yip. A special thank you to Annissa for facilitating this introduction and to Jason and Len for their insightful discussions. Today, we say goodbye to Dr. Hoorieh Jahanbani our amazing postdoc and research associate. Dr. Hoori has contributed greatly to many of our projects in the past 3 years here at MATTER Lab and Northern Analytical Lab Services at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) , but her impact goes far beyond the lab. She has been a tremendous help to international students, assisting them with everything from finding accommodations to guiding them through settling into life at University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). As she moves to the US for the next chapter of her life, we will miss her dearly. We are, however, excited for her and wish her all the best on this new journey.
