A recent study published in L'Encéphale offers newfound support for the ability of the Level of Service/Case Management Inventory™ (LS/CMI™) to assess recidivism risk. Read Study: https://lnkd.in/gPg28fJ2 The study found that the LS/CMI demonstrated acceptable inter-rater reliability and internal consistency when used with a sample of French violent offenders. The LS/CMI also showed strong correlations with other established risk assessment tools, indicating good convergent validity. Interested in learning more about the LS/CMI? “Most young people will stop offending without intervention as they mature, and there are negative consequences related to formal justice system involvement. It, therefore, makes sense to divert youth who are unlikely to re-offend.” Our recent blog explores innovative strategies designed to provide tailored interventions for young justice-involved individuals, emphasizing rehabilitation over punishment. Discover how diversion can mitigate the adverse effects of formal processing, balance accountability with support, and foster fair decision-making for better outcomes both individually and within society. Through insightful analysis and real-world examples, we highlight the importance of recognizing each youth's unique needs and risks, ultimately paving the way for a more effective and humane approach to justice. On World Mental Health Day, take a moment to reflect on the unique stressors correctional staff face daily, from the constant risk of violence to the emotional toll of managing justice-involved individuals. This profession works hard to keep the public safe. However, studies show correctional staff have a 39% higher suicide rate than other workers and a life expectancy 12-16 years shorter than the general population. These issues are a growing concern and addressing them is crucial for the well-being of correctional staff and the effectiveness of the correctional system. Let’s commit to supporting the wellbeing of our correctional staff and recognizing their critical role in our justice system. The Terrorist Radicalization Assessment Protocol-18™ (TRAP-18) has shown promising potential beyond its original intent, particularly in assessing threats posed by adolescents and young adults. A recent case study applied the TRAP-18 to Nikolas Cruz, the perpetrator of the tragic Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018. Although Cruz did not have an explicit ideological motive, the application of TRAP-18 demonstrated its effectiveness in identifying warning behaviors and characteristics associated with targeted violence. This groundbreaking analysis highlighted that Cruz exhibited six of the eight proximal warning behaviors and eight distal characteristics outlined in the TRAP-18. These findings suggest that the protocol could be a valuable tool in threat management, especially concerning young individuals who may not fit traditional definitions of terrorism but still pose significant risks. Importantly, while this case illustrates the TRAP-18's adaptability, further research is essential to validate its effectiveness for broader use with adolescents. The dynamics of young targeted attackers appear to share more similarities than differences, indicating that risk assessment instruments like the TRAP-18 may be more versatile than previously anticipated.
