🌳Happy #internationalgibbonday!🌳 Today, we celebrate the Guardians of the Forest! 📌Did you know that baby #gibbons are often targeted by #wildlife traffickers to meet the demand for #exoticpets? This cruel practice not only tears them from their families but also has devastating impacts on their populations in the wild. Let's raise awareness and protect these forest guardians from exploitation! Every share, like, and voice can help end this illegal trade and keep gibbons where they belong—singing in the wild. 🌿💚 #InternationalGibbonDay #GuardiansOfTheForest #EndWildlifeTrafficking #WildlifeConservation #primatesnotpets

Focusing on illegal and unsustainable trade in lesser-known species, and on lesser-known issues in wildlife trade.
About us
We are dedicated to stopping the decline in species negatively impacted by trade by providing objective and evidence-based scientific research. We investigate illegal wildlife trade trends at national and international levels, advise policy and conservation interventions, and create and raise consumer awareness and public concern. To advocate for positive conservation measures, we publicise our findings which include scientific-based recommendations to address the identified gaps and issues.

Charlotte Williams (Davies): "Chris R. Shepherd told me that with one look at 'Best Friends' he was reminded why he had devoted his life to trying to end the illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade... so we got talking and having heard what he and his team are doing, I had to do my bit to help." Wildlife artist Charlotte Williams is donating 40% of the proceeds of this original artwork of two #elephant friends to Monitor. Thank you Charlotte for being a friend to #wildlife! Please contact her to buy this piece and be reminded that everyone can do something to help threatened animals. Go to: https://lnkd.in/gr25k7Qc

Rapid emergence of butcherbirds in trade in Indonesia: Monitor-Oxford Wildlife Trade Research Group-@Lincoln Park Zoo-@EAZA Silent Forest Group study calls for these species be added to Indonesian protected list. “The recent emergence in popularity of the butcherbirds exemplifies the ever-growing and constantly changing demand,” said Monitor Executive Director Dr Chris R. Shepherd. The key findings of the study: 🐦Since 2016, the trade in butcherbirds has escalated significantly, with 235 butcherbirds recorded in 57 surveys across Java, Bali, and Lombok. 🐦The highest numbers were found in cities closer to their natural habitats, such as Mataram and Denpasar. 🐦Despite existing regulations, the trade in butcherbirds remains largely uncontrolled, posing a serious threat to their conservation status. #illegalwildlifetrade #wildlifecrime #birds #conservation https://lnkd.in/g9kmNtKq

It is hard to not be mesmerised by owls. But while most of us are content to admire these creatures in the wild, some folks give in to the desire to have much too close contact with these #birds - much to their detriment. Learn more about the issue of #owl cafes in Japan and the trade of #owls there from a new joint study. New Study Uncovers Emerging Threat to Vulnerable Pinyon Jay: Conservation organisations call for CITES protections Our new paper highlights a previously unheard of trade in Pinyon Jays Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus from #NorthAmerica to the #EuropeanUnion. The Pinyon Jay, assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, is in decline due to its continued decline in the #wild caused by impacts to its unique pinyon-juniper woodland #habitat. We recommend: - immediately listing the species in Appendix III of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to enable the monitoring of international trade; and - considering listing it in a higher appendix of CITES at the next Conference of the Parties, as a more restrictive measure to provide a necessary tool to prevent illegal international trade from becoming an additional threat for this unique North American songbird. Observation of threatened pinyon jays Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus in the EU pet market was published in the European Journal of Wildlife Research. Please share and support so we can make a greater impact on lesser-known species and issues in #wildlifetrade, thank you!

Langley Field Naturalists Presents: Tackling the illegal & Unsustainable Trade in Songbirds By: Dr. Chris R. Shepherd, Monitor's Executive Director September 19, 2024 - 7:30 pm Langley Community Music School, 4899- 207 St Langley, BC Come and listen to how birds are traded for their songs, their colour, and their perceived rarity, the illegal and unsustainable trade in songbirds is driving a rapidly growing list of species towards extinction. Although global in nature, nowhere is this threat greater than in Southeast Asia. Few songbird species are protected by national laws or listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Join Chris to learn more about this little-known issue and how Monitor is tackling this conservation crisis.
