INTERNATIONAL NEWS: DHS seeks info on upgrading to cloud biometrics for national security database The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is upgrading its biometric system, moving from the outdated IDENT system to the more advanced HART platform. To make this transition smoother, DHS is seeking input from private companies experienced in biometrics research, including fingerprint and facial recognition, liveness detection, and digital identity technologies. The new system will be cloud-based, allowing faster processing, scalability, and the ability to manage more types of biometric data, such as iris scans. INTERNATIONAL NEWS: EU has an innovative new way of fighting against deepfakes 🇪🇺 European law enforcement agencies are turning to microexpressions, the tiny facial movements studied by psychologist Paul Ekman, to help detect deepfakes—synthetic videos often used in identity theft, fraud, and extortion. Herta Security, a Barcelona-based company, is working on innovative deepfake detection technology by analyzing subtle, involuntary expressions that are difficult for deepfakes to imitate, like blinking and smiling naturally. This effort is part of the EITHOS project, a European initiative aimed at tackling online identity theft with tools for detecting fake videos, audio, and social media scams.
