Do you miss session-level, last-click attribution from Google Universal Analytics? We recently helped a client overcome significant challenges with UTM attribution in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) compared to their historical data from Universal Analytics (UA). GA4's event-based tracking led to gaps in capturing UTM parameters, causing inconsistencies in their marketing attribution reports. To address this, we developed a robust solution using SQL queries in BigQuery to reconstruct missing UTM data. By applying the Last Non-Direct Attribution model, we backfilled missing UTM values, ensuring complete and accurate traffic source attribution. This approach not only aligned their GA4 data with UA reporting but also enhanced their ability to make informed marketing decisions based on reliable data.
