We use technology, knowledge and passion to empower Canadians with disabilities.
About us
The Neil Squire Society has been revolutionizing the lives of Canadians with disabilities since 1984 through accessible assistive technology. Our organization was established when 21-year-old Neil Squire was left a brain-stem tetraplegic after a car crash. Seeing he was unable to speak or move his arms and legs, Neil’s family and a group of professionals in Vancouver created a ground-breaking device allowing him to communicate by using his breath to type Morse code. The technology was rudimentary at the time but it reconnected Neil to the world, allowing him to speak with family and friends once again. After Neil passed, the small but mighty group formed the Society in his name to keep improving the lives of people with disabilities. Speaking to a loved one. Checking email. Maintaining or finding a new job. Since Day One, our mandate hasn’t changed—we believe people of all abilities should have the opportunity to live, work and play without barriers. We are the Canadian leader in Assistive Technology, from innovation right through to trialing and implementation. We create affordable assistive technology devices that give people with disabilities greater control over their lives. We also offer immersive programs that teach people with disabilities how to use technology and succeed both at home and in the workplace. We are a partner of choice for government and industry decision-makers who share our passion for making Canada more accessible for all. Together, our work enables people with disabilities to achieve their goals, reach their full potential and continue living life to the fullest. #DigitalLiteracy #Employment #AssistiveTechnology #Innovation

“I find a little more clarity in conversations with workers and colleagues, especially at conferences. Have avoided the embarrassing moments of confusion and repetitions during important conversations." #WorkBCATS
Sam is a self-employed tree fruit orchard producer in Kelowna, growing apples and pears on a small orchard. He has hearing loss. “I believe this started sometime after a left a career in the local saw-milling business. I started noticing difficulty in deciphering audio from one ear and later on from both,” he shares, noting that his hearing loss made it difficult to communicate with his workers, as well as colleagues at crowded conferences that he attends for work. His audiologist recommended that he apply to WorkBC Assistive Technology Services to help him afford hearing aids. He applied and was quickly approved. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude,” he says. “I find a little more clarity in conversations with workers and colleagues, especially at conferences. “I feel much more confident when communicating with the customers on my mail route. I am also much more aware of potential hazards such as vehicles and dogs,” Ryan explains. “I can provide better service when interacting with the public, and I feel much safer when walking along narrow streets with poor visibility.” #WorkBCATS
Ryan has worked as a letter carrier for over 20 years, serving the community of Oak Bay. “I enjoy working outdoors and being a part of the community,” he shares. “I have moderate bilateral hearing loss. It impacts my interactions with customers on my route, and prevents me from hearing approaching vehicles (especially electric ones). "[WorkBC Assistive Technology Services] provided excellent encouragement to go ahead and acquire hearing aids for the first time, and provided generous funding,” he says. “I feel much more confident when communicating with the customers on my mail route.
