In 2014, Gail and David O’Brien made a foundational gift to the Cumming School of Medicine, establishing the O'Brien Institute for Public Health. Gail, LLD'10, a community leader, was passionate about medicine while David, LLD'10, who built his business career in Calgary, had always been interested in education. Today the O'Brien Institute is a leader in community-based research and is making an impact in health equity and public policy. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary this week, we’re highlighting some of our initiatives that are supporting Alberta’s most vulnerable citizens – like those that are helping to combat youth homelessness. This award celebrates distinguished research achievement and acknowledges the longstanding success of these three recipients. 🔹 Scientific Director of the International Microbiome Centre and professor Dr. Kathy McCoy is an internationally recognized leader in immunology, particularly in defining the role of the microbiome in health and disease. She says, “It is such an honour to receive the Cumming Research Award. I want to send a huge thank you to all the amazing researchers in my team, past and present, and all my collaborators. Research is always a team effort!” 🔸 Canada Research Chair in Molecular Neuroscience and professor Dr. Gerald Zamponi is a broadly recognized leader in biomedical research. He has made several significant contributions to science including the development and commercialization of pain therapeutics. He says, “I am humbled by this recognition which really belongs to all the talented staff and trainees that I have had the privilege of working with.” 🔹 Medical director co-lead of the Neurosciences and Stroke Provincial Integration and Improvement Network at Alberta Health Services and president of the Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation, Dr. Michael Hill is a renowned neurologist and stroke epidemiologist who has driven stroke research to new heights. He says, “Clinical research is a team sport and I have the privilege of working with an amazing group of people in the Calgary Stroke Program and Stroke Clinical Trials Group. This award is really for all of them.” Bravo to these three awardees. A recent #UCalgary-led study that found a high proportion of medical photographs from case reports online raises ethical and policy concerns. Publishers and corporations such as Google are best positioned to develop the most effective remedies, says study lead Dr. Zack Marshall, PhD, while clinicians need to inform patients of the risks. “Until they take action, patients should be adequately informed about the potential risks and benefits of providing consent for clinicians to publish their images in medical journals," Dr. Marshall says. "It should be clear to all during the process of giving consent that the image might one day be available in public." Research team member, undergraduate student Lauren Asaad, worked with patients to find ways to improve the informed consent process.
