"If You See It, Report It": Addressing Crime in First Nations Communities Sergeant #ChantalLarocque of Anishinabek Police Services, speaking at the 10th Annual #HealthConference in City of Sault Ste. Marie, emphasizes the importance of reporting suspicious activities to help combat crime in #FirstNations communities. This proactive approach is crucial, as these communities face unique challenges. According to Statistics Canada, police-reported crime rates in Indigenous communities are six times higher than in non-Indigenous communities. Additionally, First Nations people are more likely to experience serious problems, including victimization and disputes and least likely to report them for a number of reasons. https://lnkd.in/gQ8aVpuY.

Advocating for #SaferCommunities: The Push for #BailReform in City of Mississauga and City of Brampton as well as the Province of #Ontario Mississauga and Brampton police chiefs are calling for urgent #bailreform to keep dangerous criminals off the streets. The Ontario Association Of Police Service Boards (OAPSB) and other provincial agencies are actively supporting this initiative, by petitioning the #Ontario government to amend the #CriminalCode for stricter bail conditions. In #Ontario, the need for reform is clear: a significant number of crimes are committed by individuals out on bail. The OAPSB, along with #PoliceChiefs and other community leaders, is committed to enhancing public safety by advocating for changes that will ensure repeat and violent offenders remain in custody until their trials. Addressing Drug and Mental Health Challenges in Small Urban Communities The Guelph Police Service's Downtown Public Safety Initiative highlights the ongoing battle small urban communities face with drugs and mental health issues. In Ontario, these challenges are significant: 39% of high school students report moderate-to-serious psychological distress, and mental illness and substance use disorders are leading causes of disability. Our communities need comprehensive strategies to address these issues, ensuring safety and well-being for all residents. The Ontario Provincial Police, in partnership with Crisis Centre North Bay and the North Bay Police Service, has launched a campaign to increase awareness about the Safe Streets Act. While giving money to individuals soliciting at intersections might seem helpful, it creates significant safety risks for both motorists and pedestrians. To address this, local police are educating the public on the Safe Streets Act and encouraging contributions to local charities and shelters instead. This approach ensures that vulnerable people receive support while enhancing safety for all #community members.
