The Ontario Bar Association is the voice of the legal profession.
About us
The Ontario Bar Association is a branch of the Canadian Bar Association, an organization of lawyers formed to provide support by the profession to the profession so that it may render better service to its members and the public. This is accomplished by both education and representation to government on topics of current concern. The Ontario Bar Association provides lawyers with opportunities to become more efficient and effective, to further their professional education and to keep abreast of current developments within the profession, nationally and provincially. Membership in the Canadian Bar Association entitles lawyers to participate in these educational programs at a lower cost than non-members. In addition, members can take an active role in law reform and law amendment, both provincially and federally. Meetings of the national organization, the provincial organization and the individual Sections offer the opportunity to meet other members of the profession from all parts of the country with like interests on a basis afforded in no other manner. The Canadian Bar Association has been in existence since 1896 and was incorporated April 15, 1921 while the Ontario Branch has been in existence since 1907 and was incorporated on April 22, 1985. Delighted to be part of the Ontario Bar Association new innovative and ambitious education program for the legal profession on AI: the AI Trial Advocacy Program. https://lnkd.in/dpVZwiaD Sometimes AI education for lawyers is critiqued for not being practical enough. In my view, more descriptive sessions (if done well!) have value in terms of building some basic literacy and introducing key areas of opportunity and risks. It is great, though, to supplement that type of education with very practical and contextual instruction. With the OBA's new program "AI Trial Advocacy: Your Guide to Handling the Evidentiary Implications of Artificial Intelligence", participants will get just that! On Day 1 (Nov 1), titled "In Advance of the Trial", participants will be introduced to how AI interacts with key evidence principles and unique challenges that arise in dealing with self-reps at AI. But much of the day will be devoted to live demonstrations that engage a hypothetical factual scenario. For example, there will be a demonstration of an examination for discovery of an AI product representative. Day 2 (Nov 29) titled "the Trial" will feature demonstrations of various direct and cross examinations in relation to AI-evidence, ending the day with observations from the bench and a panel on "where do we go from here" (this is where I come in). The Faculty for this program is truly first class. It includes (in order of appearance) the Honourable Peter Lauwers, Maura R. Grossman, the Honourable Jill Presser, Suzanne Chiodo, Sam Rogers, Matthew Maslow, the Honourable Fred Myers, Brent Arnold, Zohar Levy, Paul-Erik Veel, Aaron Wenner, the Honourable Ria Tzimas, Kathryn J. Manning, Darcy Romaine, the Honourable Laura Ntoukas, Jennifer Leitch, Katherine Di Tomaso, Heather L. Hansen, Tali Green, Andrea Gonsalves, Nathan Read-Ellis, Ian Hull, LSM, Hilary Book, Colin Lachance, Paul Lomic and James Tumbridge. I am not aware of any other CPD event that has done a simulation like this - and I'm so excited to be a part of it. Consider joining us if this falls in your wheelhouse!
