What a day! Had to turn social media off though! Turns out cyber security is hard & responding to a cyber incident is a team sport - who would have thought?! 99% of who will see this have either been working in an Incident Management capacity or seen the news (great job Tom K.) of IT issues concerning: 🛬 Airports 🚨 Emergency services 📺 News channels 💳 Payment systems (and a host of others) I just wanted to use this post to bring people’s attention to a number of other aspects of this event that will now continue over the weekend & in to next week, including: ☎️ PR teams or the team that would normally be dealing with communications, maybe even the marketing team, dealing with inbound requests from partners and the supply chain to understand their risk. 📰 These teams might also be juggling customer support requests of a more technical nature than normal as well as from media outlets of local, regional and national level wanting some 'form of words'. 🧑🔧 Of course the technical teams, whether in-house or external will be working at the pace of a thousand gazelles to understand the vulnerability, the threat, the risk, looking for a fix / a patch. Bringing people back online to continue organisational BAU whilst batting off a thousand different questions. 🧑💼C-Suite wanting to understand what the businesses risk profile is looking like, whilst receiving their unvetted information from their favourite social media feeds. Key decisions will be made by these individuals to direct the above and they will need help piecing all of the information they have, together. 📥 Inboxes pinging as various business units are engaging with various players within the incident management team, which could be General Counsel, your Insurer, your outsourced IT Provider as well as duplicated communications to known persons rather than the identified POC for the incident. My thoughts this evening and over the weekend, from experience, go to the stress these teams and the individuals will be experiencing with most being “non-technical” as they work their way through the incident. We talk a lot in the profession about cyber security being a team game & if I hope one thing is identified by organisations over this next period, it’s that exercising cyber incidents across the business, not just the technical teams, is practiced going forwards.
