D. uOttawa students participated in the Empathy Project - a workshop created in collaboration with the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa. Through immersive simulations, these students experienced what it’s like to navigate the complexities of housing insecurity and homelessness.   💡 This was more than just an exercise – it was a profound reminder that empathy must be at the heart of their practice and their future careers. It’s been a true privilege to lead this year's Empathy Project with Christine Mathew and Dr. Claire Kendall, working with the incredible team at the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa. Every year, my heart swells seeing how deeply this workshop touches the students who will one day serve as healthcare providers in our community. Watching these future doctors and pharmacists embrace the human side of healthcare, developing not only their medical expertise but also their compassion for the most vulnerable, fills me with hope.

This Friday, I'm volunteering for the Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa's Empathy project. University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine students will participate in an experiential learning exercise led by people who have experienced homelessness. The program aims to show participants how difficult it can be to access housing, employment, legal aid, food, and income support. The Alliance is looking for volunteers - especially those who can speak French. You'll help with putting up signs and giving directions to participants, as well as sitting and reading from a script, taking on the role of a service provider. I've done it a few times and got to say it's a worthwhile experience. Checkout links to volunteer sign up sheets in the comments.

Applications are being accepted 👇 🆕 The Housing and Homelessness Leadership Table (HHLT) has been developed by the City of Ottawa’s Housing Services Department and the housing and homelessness sector in a co-design process over the last two years. On behalf of OCH, I was able to work with many housing and homelessness sector leaders on the Interim HHLT to help set the framework for this new structure that will be about working collaboratively and providing strategic guidance with clear outcomes. Currently, the recruitment committee (Ottawa Community Housing Corporation (OCH), Alliance to End Homelessness Ottawa, City of Ottawa Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition) is seeking applicants for the permanent HHLT. This Saturday, August 31st is International Overdose Awareness Day. 11 days ago, the province of Ontario decided to close 10 supervised consumption sites, including one run by our member the Somerset West Community Health Centre, whose staff reversed 487 overdoses last year. #TogetherWeCan #IOAD2024 #EndOverdose
