A drone photo is worth a thousand words! 📸 Palmer has been using drones for aerial photography and video to help bring efficiency and additional capabilities to our field programs, as well as a new perspective to reporting. Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), are a non-intrusive method of collecting landscape data. They are equipped with high-resolution cameras that can cover large areas and reduce the need for staff to traverse difficult or unsafe topography. The ‘birds-eye view’ can provide a greater perspective for features compared to a ground-level view. In this example, the drone has been used to photograph an area of potential spawning habitat adjacent to a homeowner looking to expand their cottage. Drones can offer additional capabilities and advantages such as thermal imaging, 3D mapping or photogrammetry and can be equipped with LiDAR or radio tracking sensors. We plan to continue to use drones as a powerful and informative tool!

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) is updating the River and Streams Systems: Erosion Hazard Limit Technical Guide (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2002). GEO Morphix Ltd. is leading a team of practitioners from Beacon Environmental Limited, J.F. Sabourin and Associates Inc. (JFSA), Kerr Wood Leidal Associates Ltd., Matrix Solutions Inc., Palmer, Terraprobe Inc., and Water's Edge Environmental Solutions Team Ltd. to coordinate the guide update. We expect the update to be of value to Ontario practitioners who are familiar with the existing guide and/or with riverine erosion hazards. As such, a survey is being circulated to practitioners to solicit feedback on how the guide is being interpreted, applied and how it may be improved. Results of the survey will be amalgamated for consideration as part of the guide update. If you are an Ontario practitioner and wish to contribute to the guide update, we ask that you take the time to complete the survey using the following link: https://lnkd.in/geiisYgn The survey may take up to 30 minutes to complete, depending on your preferred level of input. Survey results will be compiled and assessed by March 14, 2024.
