Rad time chatting with Susan Ormiston from CBC at COP28 in the UAE about the often-overlooked yet worsening issue of diminishing freshwater supplies’ feedback loop with climate change. This crisis demands a disruptive change in the global water supply, shifting to a treatment process that is massively more carbon and cost-intensive (5-20x times higher per liter of water than before). We don't have much choice with this inevitable 'water transition' amplified by climate change. We must accept this reality. This will not solve itself. For a sector already high in emissions and struggling to provide cost-effective supply for cities and industries, we must transform existing & new facilities 10x faster than BAU if we are serious about de-risking and decarbonizing water supply. The silver lining is that (similar to other resource-intensive chemical process industries) many treatment plants can reduce their GHG emissions by 5-30% while improving margins and risk profiles, and they can do this without relying on aggressive regulatory incentives. However, we must decentralize to provide high-quality Operations Intelligence (AI for treatment) at the facility level, empowering plant managers and operators to make crucial decisions on optimizations and retrofits 10x faster. That's what we're doing at Pani & wont stop until we have achieved 1% global emmission reductions!
