Resilience. Adaptability. Focus. Clearco CEO Andrew C. Curtis and I had the privilege of sitting down with Martina Fuchs at Collision Conf to discuss how our businesses have not only survived the venture winter but used that as an opportunity set ourselves up for future success. Our shared experiences of successes and challenges made for a fun and enlightening conversation. This is the second "venture winter" I’ve experienced. For the first six years of Paper, hardly anyone was even considering investments in edtech. Prior to our Series A, Roberto and I pitched 125 funds. It was tough and we had plenty of reasons to quit. But we pushed forward. I'm grateful that we did. During our conversation on stage, Andrew and I shared perspective on the importance of perseverance and adaptability. When times are challenging and uncertain, it is even more important to anchor and commit to your mission - let that be your guide. Tough decisions will need to be made, but make sure they don't compromise your mission. We talked about how crucial it is to be flexible as you navigate the evolving landscape and customer needs. But, at the same time, staying extremely FOCUSED. There is no substitute for time in market, and speaking to customers will always help you drive your mission and vision forward. I'm proud to be part of an industry that is transforming education and making a tangible difference in students' lives. This journey has been tough, but it has also been incredibly rewarding. I've seen every angle of it and want to share as much of that knowledge with others to help them avoid the mistakes I have made. To the edtech founders that were in the audience, I know it is hard, but don't quit. Keep pushing and let the mission guide your decisions. Resilience will be rewarded. And our kids need you more than ever.
