This weekend, ParticipACTION was thrilled to join the community in Hay River for a day-long event to celebrate their achievement of being named Canada’s Most Active Community and the national winner of the ParticipACTION Community Challenge presented by Novo Nordisk. 🏆 Hay River competed against more than 1200 communities for the title and more than 40 organizations hosted 197 events, programs, and activities that provided opportunities for community members of all ages and abilities to get active throughout the challenge. From a bike bus program to a senior’s lift-and-learn program to walking clubs, Hay River found creative, fun and accessible ways to get active where they live, learn and play. As the winner of the Community Challenge, they are also the recipients of the $100,000 grand prize. At the event, the Mayor of Hay River announced that the funds would be used to enhance and expand Hay River’s sport and recreation fund and their Inukshuk Park Revitalization project. Thank you so much to the Town of Hay River for having us and helping break down barriers to physical activity. Everyone in Canada should have access to quality sport and physical activity opportunities that help people thrive physically, emotionally and socially. The community challenge is proudly supported by the Government of Canada, Novo Nordisk, and supporting partner, Saputo Inc., and we are grateful for these partnerships and support. Thank you to Minister Vince McKay, Mayor Kandis Jameson, and Jaclyn Crawford, Novo Nordisk, for joining and celebrating with us this weekend!

When it comes to movement, Canada is moving in the wrong direction. Only 49% of adults and 39% of kids are meeting national physical activity guidelines. By making room to move, we can create a society of active people; one where we not only make physical activity a priority but also a natural part of everyday life.

We often can't get away from screentime, from our work to entertainment. So ParticipACTION wanted to find a way to get people in Canada moving, even in front of screens. Over the next six weeks, look out for Watch & Move prompts on your screen and perform the suggested exercises. We'd love to see your Watch & Move moments, so share them on social media and tag us @ParticipACTION!
