The Policy Insights Forum is pleased to publish another PIF Policy Brief by Rear-Admiral (Retired) Ian Mack who outlines in his recent publication the persistent procurement failures over the past decade and suggests adopting a “brain trust” model like President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s, involving external experts to guide the procurement of major weapons platforms. Admiral Mack argues countries like Australia and the United Kingdom have successfully implemented brain trusts for defence, while Canada has yet to fully embrace such external expertise. Admiral Mack also emphasizes that the brain trust must include knowledgeable individuals from various sectors to ensure credibility. He advocates for the creation of a standing brain trust to provide ongoing advice, helping to resolve inefficiencies in Canada’s military procurement system. The Policy Insights Forum is committed to advancing action-oriented engagements with Industry, Government and Indigenous stakeholders. Recently members of our team met with Stardust CEO Jason Michaud and their CBDO Matthew Gallina who are taking steps to make space exploration more accessible, especially to Indigenous and First Nations people. They are the founders of the Anangokaa Festival (Anangokaa means "there are many stars" in Anishinabeg). The festival connects Indigenous communities and Industry executives to explore STEM educational workshops in First Nations, employment readiness seminars, and cultural awareness workshops. The event will take place in Timmins, ON and travel across multiple First Nations in Northern Ontario, that are part of the Wabun Tribal Council, Mushkegowuk Council and Nishnawbe Aski Nations from Friday, September 27th - October 4th, 2024. The Policy Insights Forum, through its Indigenous Reconciliation Action Plan, is committed to promoting initiatives such as the Anangokaa Festival and looks forward to exploring future collaborations.
