Pond-Deshpande Centre reposted this
Had an incredible time, accompanying my supervisor Justin Ryan representing the New Brunswick Multicultural Council (NBMC) at the Social Enterprise Excellence Symposium in Saint John; thanks to the Pond-Deshpande Centre and Vanessa Paesani for successfully hosting this event. It was also great to reconnect with Vanessa as we met at the Port Saint John competition. One of the NBMC's flagship programs is "Culture Connects," an intercultural training course designed to build paths of inclusion in all aspects of our society. Drawing on decades of experience that the NBMC has in serving both the newcomer community and key strategic partners throughout the province, this highly-interactive workshop builds the skills, attitudes, and perspectives needed to make fundamental new connections. It was great to see Justin's showcase of Culture Connects at the symposium. One of the most memorable quotes from the symposium was “The Abundance Project: Tool up your social enterprise to make change.” I also found the breakout session on creating value that is unseen before and quantifying it particularly valuable. For instance, the example of education for former inmates saving money from people reentering prison was a great illustration of how social enterprises can create measurable, positive impacts. I also gained valuable insights into social procurement. This approach can be a powerful tool for supporting social enterprises and driving positive social and economic change. In one of the workshops, we actually got a chance to visit Key Industries Inc., a prominent social enterprise with a well-oiled stream of revenues and a significant social impact. Their success is a testament to the potential of social enterprises to create both economic and social value. It was inspiring to see how social enterprise is thriving in NB and to connect with emerging social enterprises. I gained valuable insights into funding opportunities and creating sustainable businesses. This experience has been invaluable as I wrap up my co-op placement. Merci à tous pour cette journée incroyable! Je suis impatient de voir ce que l'avenir réserve pour le secteur de l'entreprise sociale au Nouveau-Brunswick.
