🏗️Hospice residence construction update! 🏗️ It's the beginning of a new month, meaning we're one step closer to the opening of Providence Care's 10-bed hospice residence located at 152 Phillips St. within Providence Village! 🏠Outside, Utilities Kingston has been busy connecting the hydro service and electricians are hard at work powering up the site as installation of exterior lighting begins. The construction team has also just completed the installation of the two new fire hydrants and the gas service to the building. They are now working to finish the rough grading on site and excavation for concrete curbs has begun for the path walks and the parking lot. With the exterior of the building now buttoned up and weather tight, we are ready for the winter season! 🎨 Inside the building, rooms are truly taking shape. Patient rooms are getting fresh coats of paint while contractors work ahead to install drywall in the last few areas. Tile crews will be on site in the next few weeks to make everything pretty with wall and floor installations! Thank you to the community for your belief and support in bringing this vision to life! 👏This wouldn't have been possible without your support and donations through University Hospitals Kingston Foundation. Together, we’re creating a safe, comforting space where families can share precious moments during life’s final chapter.

We have an update on patient and artist Jack Goodwin! If you missed your chance to purchase art from Jack two weeks ago, he'll be back at it on Nov. 22 at the Holiday Market at Providence Care Hospital. 45-year-old Jack Goodwin sells his original Cree artwork during a two-day art sale in the lobby of Providence Care Hospital to dozens of people who line up and wait their turn to purchase something. “It feels great and awesome to be able to sell my art. I’m very grateful, very appreciative,” says Jack. Jack is from Kashechewan, a Cree First Nation community in Northern Ontario near James Bay and is receiving rehabilitation at Providence Care Hospital after a double leg amputation, above the knee, that took place in the summer of 2024. “I had a heart attack,” explains Jack. “During the operation for my heart, something went wrong and it cost me both my legs.” Throughout his hospital stay Jack has found hope and inspiration in creating artwork that reminds him of home. Providence Care Spiritual Health Associate Shelley Kirby encouraged Jack to create an art sale as a therapy goal. Through Jack’s hard work and the support of Providence Care staff in the Spiritual Health Department and Providence Care’s Indigenous Transition Facilitator Josee Sunday, Jack was able to sell more than 300 pieces of art and take preorders for his next sale; the Holiday Market at Providence Care Hospital on Nov. 22, 2024. “I’m overwhelmed by the support and honoured to be a part of this community,” says Shelley. “Jack arrived here in the midst of life changing circumstances, but through his own strengths he created a situation that has allowed him to flourish, achieving monumental goals even before he returns home. When I saw all these people lining up to support Jack, the nurses and PSWS [Personal Support Workers] from his floor, the Environmental Services staff, the Administration, other patients, it just reminded me that we’re all here to honour the best in each other.” Jack is unable to return to his career as a security guard but is hopeful he can start to make a living as an artist when he does return home. He says having the opportunity to sell his work at Providence Care and see the enthusiasm of the buyers makes him excited for the future. “This makes me want to draw more,” he says with a smile. Join Jack on Nov. 22, 2024 at the Holiday Market located at Providence Care Hospital. Read Jack's full story here: https://ow.ly/lLVM50TZnqc

Before October comes to a close, we want to shine a spotlight on the remarkable work of our Respiratory Therapists. Therapists just like Taylar Wall, who's skill, dedication and compassion make an enormous difference for patients. 👩⚕️🧑⚕️ Providence Care Respiratory Therapist (RT) Taylar Wall has been a fixture at Providence Care Hospital since 2021. He is Providence Care’s only full-time respiratory therapist working alongside 15 others who rotate their shifts between Providence Care and Kingston Health Sciences Centre. Taylar works primarily on Lakeview 2, the hospital’s Complex Medical Care unit which has 10 beds for patients who use ventilators. “Daily we maintain the ventilator machines, provide airway care, maintain tracheostomy tubes, support nursing staff who are ventilator trained and orient and educate staff, including those new to the unit, while keeping up on education and best practices ourselves,” explains Taylar. The Complex Medical Care inpatient unit at Providence Care Hospital received funding to expand to 10 beds in the fall of 2023, which is when Taylar became the hospital’s full-time RT. The program’s goal is to increase quality of life for longer stay patients who use ventilators while also freeing up beds in Intensive Care units (ICUs) at acute care hospitals. “I really get to know these patients because I’m seeing them on a daily basis, whereas in the ICU you rotate through the hospital, through all the departments, and the patients are short stay, so you don’t really get to know the patients or their families,” explains Taylar. “Here we work daily with the patients and their family members and other allied health care team members to help with all the other therapies the patient is doing. It could be something like assisting to get the patient outside on the patio for therapy or helping take the patient for a walk for fresh air.” As Providence Care celebrates National Respiratory Therapy (RT) Week, we're shining a light on the dedication of Taylar and the rest of the Providence Care respiratory therapists who provide high-quality, compassionate care every day and make a positive difference in the lives of the people we care for and their loved loves. You're invited to Jack Goodwin's Cree Art Sale this Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days in the main lobby of Providence Care Hospital. Become an important part of Jack's recovery. Read his story below! 45-year-old Jack Goodwin isn’t one for a lot of small talk or chit-chats. Sitting quietly in his hospital room at Providence Care Hospital he shares his thoughts, feelings and emotions through the art he creates daily. “I’m inspired by nature back home; I see the pictures in my mind and I draw them.” Jack is from Kashechewan, a Cree First Nation community in Northern Ontario near James Bay. He’s receiving rehabilitation at Providence Care Hospital following a double leg amputation, above the knee, that took place in the summer of 2024. “I had a heart attack,” explains Jack. “During the operation for my heart, something went wrong and it cost me both my legs.” Life has completely changed for Jack and is filled with uncertainties. He’s a long way from his fly-in-only community, misses his family, is unable to return to his career as a security guard and is unsure how to navigate life outside the hospital in a wheelchair. However, through all the uncertainty, Jack remains focused on what he can control, finding joy through creating art. “Here, I’m creating black and white drawings and I like to combine animals into other pictures. Loons, eagles, faces, water. I’m inspired by other Cree art, my mentors, my home and my family.” Providence Care Spiritual Health Associate Shelley Kirby is working with Jack through his recovery. Blown away by his art and talent, she’s assisting Jack with an art sale event where he will sell prints and originals of his work for two days from the main lobby of Providence Care Hospital. “I talked with Jack about what gives his life meaning and he showed me his extraordinary art," says Shelley. "We discussed what life will look like when he gets home, and we explored what it might look like to sell art on a more professional basis which brought us to having a sale table here at Providence Care Hospital to show more people his work.” Jack will sell prints of his original work for $10 and his originals for $20, on Wed., Oct. 23, and Thurs., Oct. 24 in the main lobby of Providence Care Hospital from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days. "I hope when he sees people celebrate who he is and what he can create, it reminds him of his potential and the gift that he is," says Shelley. Providence Care staff, students, volunteers and the general public are invited to support Jack during his art sale and become a meaningful part in his recovery journey. “Making art takes away my stress and makes me feel good. This whole experience has made me want to start a career in artwork." Please allow yourself to be inspired by Jack at his art sale on Wed., Oct. 23, and Thurs., Oct. 24 in the main lobby of Providence Care Hospital from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days.
