  • Canadian settlement orgs, we hear IRCC is asking for an anti-racism policy. We've got a FREE toolkit to help you get it done. But we've also got a few *humble* words of advice 😇

📢 Free Anti-Racism Policy Toolkit for Settlement Orgs With new IRCC funding requirements, settlement organizations must have an anti-racism policy in place in the next few months. But here’s the thing: having an anti-racism policy doesn’t automatically mean an organization is more equitable. At QuakeLab, we have spent a long time trying to find evidence that an anti-racism policy alone can drive real change. A policy is only as effective as the systems that uphold it. Because we were unable to be confident in the efficacy of an anti-racism policy, we’re making this toolkit free for settlement organizations—so they can meet compliance while focusing on measurable, data informed change. This step-by-step guide is designed to simplify policy development, ensuring organizations can craft an anti-racism policy that goes beyond performative statements and works toward systemic equity. The toolkit includes: ✅ A structured policy template to meet IRCC requirements ✅ Checklists and tools for integrating a GBA+ (Gender-Based Analysis Plus) lens ✅ Practical steps to move from compliance to real action ✅ Monitoring and accountability guides to ensure the policy is meaningful and sustainable We’re also inviting organizations that have resources to invest in the real work: investigating, redesigning, and embedding equity into every part of their operations. Because a policy on its own won’t change much—but systems change will. 🔗 Download the toolkit here: https://lnkd.in/g6BuPXVi

Loved this by QuakeLab! Reframing equity as a technical skill and decentering my activist passion in order to effect actual organizational change = gold. 🤩 🤯 I'm also very grateful to the academics working on EDI-related topics. I've learned so much from them, especially at uOttawa | Faculté des sciences sociales | Faculty of Social Sciences. I used to dislike being called an "activist", because I found it reductionist and thought it was sometimes used as an insult. Case in point: years ago I was mentioned in a local newspaper. They spoke of other people and named their titles or careers, but identified me only as an "activist". But now I'll take it. For me the word is now associated with passion, with embodying your values, and with actively working to make the world a better place. I can do that regardless of my title, but I do need to continue learning how to adapt to the environment in which I'm working to create positive change. Let's keep on keeping on. https://lnkd.in/gTCfDsJa

  • Why do we do things this way? In recruitment, many of the "best practices" we rely on not only allow inequity and inefficiency to thrive, but they also don’t have a solid rationale for existing in their current form. Take cover letters as an example. Unless you can: 🔬 Clearly articulate why they exist, 🌍 Ensure they’re used consistently across roles, 🔍 Define a transparent and fair method for assessing them, and 😊 Make that assessment criteria accessible to applicants Then cover letters may be doing more harm than good. Outdated recruitment practices often create barriers instead of bridges, excluding talented individuals and perpetuating inequities. If we want workplaces that are truly equitable and effective, it’s time to rethink the entire recruitment process, starting with the most critical question: Why? At QuakeLab, we believe that every step in the hiring process should serve a clear purpose and contribute to building systems that are fair, inclusive, and intentional. By redesigning recruitment with equity and efficiency in mind, we can shift from tradition to transformation. What recruitment practices do you think need to be reimagined? This program and the people who take part each year are incredible. I can't believe I get to see my photo in the mix! The level of ambition and care these Young Leaders show is exactly what our communities need, and it makes me feel better about the future knowing they are out there growing into leadership roles. As an added bonus, the training and support we coaches get from folks like QuakeLab make this volunteer experience one of a kind. k, I'll stop gushing now.

National Philanthropy Day is an opportunity to celebrate the transformative impact philanthropy can have—but let's talk about the $105 billion in philanthropic wealth that’s not usually discussed.   While Canadian foundations grant $8 billion annually, they hold over $105 billion in investments. Yet, as highlighted in the 2024 Top 50 Equitable Funders project by Future of Good and QuakeLab, 90% of grantmakers don’t publicly share what’s in their portfolios. Foundations are required to report the grants they make, but there’s no similar requirement for the investments that often generate these funds. Without transparency, it's difficult to ensure that philanthropic wealth serves the public good.   How might greater transparency around investments lead to stronger, more accountable relationships with communities? Read more about why investment transparency matters on our blog. And stay tuned—we’ll be sharing more about our work and progress in this area in the new year. 🔗 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eVCMAbPJ #Philanthropy #LeadWithEquity #EquitableFunders #ImpactInvesting

Are hospital wait times sexist? It’s a question that might sound provocative at first glance, but consider this: in Canada and globally, healthcare systems face severe cuts, with emergency care particularly hard-hit. Yet, the healthcare sector—where over 90% of nurses are women—is one of the most dangerous to work in, with incidents of violence against staff at alarming levels. Research reveals that the architecture of traditional hospitals often isolates nurses, leaving them more vulnerable. And wait times? They’re not just an inconvenience; they’re a major trigger for violence, as identified by healthcare workers themselves. Adding to this, care work has increasingly become not just gendered but racialized, with immigrant women filling the most low-paying, precarious positions. These workers, often at the intersection of multiple vulnerabilities, bear the brunt of systemic inequities that put their safety and livelihoods at risk. The underreporting of violence and sexual assault among healthcare workers is staggering, masking the true scope of the problem. With healthcare spending cuts that increase these wait times and place staff at even greater risk, we must ask: are these decisions inherently sexist and discriminatory? The answer feels uncomfortably clear: yes. This is yet another example of why equity must be approached as a technical skill—integrated into decision-making and system design to protect and uplift those who are most impacted. What are your thoughts on how we can better support our healthcare workforce and challenge these systems?
