Aligning capital with indigenous values.
About us
The Reconciliation and Responsible Investment Initiative (RRII) is a partnership between NATOA and SHARE. We work with Canadian institutional investors to promote responsible investment policies and practices that include reconciliation goals. We believe that, together, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous investors can build capital markets that integrate and better align with Indigenous values and ways of knowing. Our approach is grounded in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Principles of Reconciliation and Call to Action 92 directed at business. RRII has recently updated our website. Find us online at RRII.org.

#FlashbackFridays>> At this year Institutional Connect West Forum, Institutional Connect had the opportunity to interview Shannon Rohan, Chief Strategy Officer at SHARE—Shareholder Association for Research and Education. Shannon talked about the Reconciliation & Responsible Investing Initiative (RRII), its objectives and outcome. She also mentioned about how institutional investors can work with indigenous communities on energy transition investment, some best practices that SHARE invested in to promote inclusivity for Indigenous communities, and potential emerging areas of focus for the rest of 2024 and beyond. "The only thing that I would add in the context of the energy transition is that we have to recognize that indigenous rights are being impacted in an ongoing way, not only in Canada but around the world. They are being impacted by extractive industries and other industries whether it is agribusiness or renewable energy." #ICWF24 #institutionalconnect #Indigenous #energytransition #investment #indigenouspartnerships #indigenousprosperity

Join SHARE—Shareholder Association for Research and Education and Financial Reporting & Assurance Standards Canada for a conversation on the role of investors in implementing sustainability disclosure standards in Canada. The Canadian Sustainability Standards Board (CSSB) has released its first proposed Canadian Sustainability Disclosure Standards (CSDS), replicating recommendations put forth by the global baselines of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB). The CSSB has opened consultation on CSDS 1 and 2, looking to hear from investors on proposed modifications and desired requirement changes.

Chi-miigwetch Gina Gambetta, and Responsible Investor for the opportunity to comment on Citibank's release of their report, Respecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. "While the high-level disclosure put out by Citibank is appreciated, the report does not provide investors with the information they need to assess the material risks. What specific Indigenous rights risks were identified in the analysis of transactions? How are impacted Indigenous peoples and communities included in the due diligence and decision-making processes? What is the ongoing monitoring, and redress process for identified risks?" I had the pleasure of talking about Indigenous Peoples' free, prior, and informed consent and what this means for investors, at the SHARE—Shareholder Association for Research and Education Investor Summit in Vancouver. Here are some highlights: The meaning of free, prior, and informed consent: ✅ It is an expression of Indigenous Peoples right to self-determination, to determine their futures, and to make decisions about matters affecting them, in accordance with their own procedures. It is a safeguard recognized by international law, aimed to ensure the realization of their rights, including to their cultures and cultural identity, lands, territories and resources. ❌ It is not merely a stakeholder engagement or consultation process, as is the current common industry practice. Common industry standards and policies, such as those of the ICMM, and the Equator Principles, are NOT aligned with free, prior, and informed consent. The implications of free, prior, and informed consent for investors: ✅ The process to exercising free, prior, and informed consent is something to be defined by the Indigenous Peoples in concern. Investors should hear directly from rights-holders to understand if free, prior, and informed consent is respected. ❌ Investors must not rely on company self-disclosure to understand whether their investee companies respect free, prior, and informed consent or not. Rather, when looking at self-disclosure, investors should seek to understand what information the company is not disclosing. Thanks a lot for inviting me to this important event! Joseph Bastien, Tamara Herman, Shannon Rohan! For a list of resources on free, prior and informed consent, see comments below.👇
