Dedicated to a safe, fair, and sustainable mining and metals industry.

About us

ICMM's vision is a safe, just and sustainable world enabled by responsibly produced minerals and metals. Each of our company members – which together account for one-third of the global mining and metals industry – commits to implementing our Mining Principles as a condition of membership. These principles are neither static nor do they represent the ceiling of our ambition. We are always challenging ourselves to go ever further in setting the highest of standards for responsible mining, and delivery. We promise to work collaboratively with associations and other stakeholders to enhance the contribution of mining and metals to sustainable development. Our commitment to working with others does not stop at our industry’s boundaries. We were founded on a spirit of open engagement, and we continue to champion diversity of opinions today to deliver bold leadership for our wider industry and non-resources sectors alike.

Minerals and metals are used as base materials in products, technologies and infrastructure across almost every sector. By strengthening approaches to reducing emissions, tailings and other waste; optimising water usage; regenerating closed mine sites; valorising and recycling other waste such as tyres; and focussing on efficiency, the sustainability of materials entering value chains can be improved. Collaboration to promote the responsible use and recovery of responsibly produced metals after they enter markets can help to ultimately enable circular economies. #Naturepositive is a global goal to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030, compared to a 2020 baseline, and to achieve full ecosystem recovery by 2050. It’s about regenerating the planet's biodiversity, protecting ecosystems and enabling a sustainable future for all 🌱 Earlier this week, the Global Nature Positive Summit, co-hosted by the Australian Government and Government of New South Wales (NSW Government), brought together leaders from government, corporate sectors, research institutions, environmental organisations, and Indigenous Peoples to accelerate collective action driving investment in nature and exploring ways to safeguard our planet. Alongside Dr Doug Hilton (CSIRO) and Kobad Bhavnagri (BloomergNEF), ICMM’s Environment Director, Emma Gagen discussed the role of science in driving nature-positive solutions for businesses and industries noting that cross-sector collaboration will be essential to accelerate progress on amplified nature action through the value chain.

Change begins with us. On #MentalHealthDay, it is important to consider our responsibility to improve the experience of workers in our industry. In June 2023, we updated our Mining Principles – which are member commitments - to elevate the importance of psychological safety alongside that of physical health and safety. Population growth, social progress and clean energy technologies are increasing demand for minerals and metals. At COP28, a landmark commitment was made by nearly 120 nations to triple the world’s installed renewable energy generation capacity by 2030. However, even with the predicted future increase in recycling to help bridge the supply gap, it is estimated that more than 300 new mines may still be needed to meet the demand created by the energy transition. Increasing the circularity of mining and metals value chains will help us to sustainably and responsibly meet the growing demand for metals. ICMM’s new Tools for Circularity will help mining and metals companies minimise waste and maximise value throughout every stage of the life cycle, from sourcing, to production, to use and recovery. 🌍"With privilege & opportunity comes responsibility" Today, Rohitesh Dhawan, President & CEO of ICMM, was at the Financial Times Energy Transition India Summit offering insights on how the mining industry can transform its responsibility to decarbonise into its greatest opportunity by: - Committing to the goal of net-zero by 2050 which provides the North Star for the decarbonisation journey for mining companies - Launching initiatives to reduce diesel associated emissions whilst improving safety such as ICMM’s ICSV initiative that could make zero emission vehicles available at scale by 2030 - Using 100% renewable energy, to make mines the catalytic force for the growth of renewables for the entire regions and countries while reducing costs and improving operational reliability - Working to decarbonise the full value chain also known as Scope 3 emissions - Consolidating standards to simplify the current fragmented landscape Read more: https://lnkd.in/ejVMQPzS #EnergyTransition #Decarbonisation

It’s time for us all to show up for nature 🌍 #WorldHabitatDay The mining and metals industry is dependent on the essential services provided by healthy ecosystems — such as reliable access to clean water, erosion prevention, and flood control. We bear a responsibility to understand our ecological footprint, actively mitigate impacts, and seek opportunities to contribute to the conservation and restoration of nature through thoughtful land and water stewardship. Hello! Welcome to our new LinkedIn page for the Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative (CMSI)! CMSI is a collaboration between The Copper Mark, ICMM, Mining Association of Canada and World Gold Council to consolidate our four different voluntary responsible mining standards into one global standard and multi-stakeholder oversight system. The goal is to simplify the current upstream mining standards landscape and promote continual improvement of environmental, social and governance practices along individual metals’ value chains.  👉 This is where we will share news and event updates, so we invite you to click follow.
