In our family tradition, Seva is selfless service. Seva is also connected to other Sanskrit concepts such as dāna (gift giving), karunā (compassion), and preman (kindness). One of the foundational philosophies of service for the Reena Group and its founders is intertwined with food. As a family we believe that food plays a central role in a family that transcends simple nutrition. It is a conduit for conversing, healing, nurturing, sharing and growing. I know that we often take our food for granted. Despite the escalating costs of groceries, many of us have ample and ready access to nutritious, tasty food. Conversely and sadly, there are many in our communities, our seniors and children included that are compelled to rely on great organizations such as the Seva Food Bank just to make ends meet. More than ever, Canadians are struggling and it is organizations such as Seva that are the few bright lights of community service that are still visible. On May 23, in memory of one of our Founders, current leadership team, our 88 year old co-founder and 2 teams of 25 colleagues spent the day at the Seva Food Bank organizing food but more importantly learning about different challenges in the community. For a brief few hours we were transported to a place to self-reflect on the privilege of having access to delicious and nutritious food and the stark realities that confront our fellow community members. I wanted to thank Seva’s Executive Director, Vipin Saini for the time he spent with us. And of course, I wanted to thank our teams at Reena Group for their time and the 251Kg (553lbs) of food donated to this incredible cause. Reena Group was co-founded 40 years ago by an exceptionally energetic woman of East-Indian descent by challenging the norms of the time. Starting a business in a foreign country with no money, contacts or help, she balanced entrepreneurship and family to sow the seeds of her legacy that has become the Reena Group. Consistent with her core beliefs of family, she would be proud that we continue to prosper at the same time we continue to revere family and the daughters, wives and mothers of the families that sacrifice their time and efforts for our collective success. While March 8 is International Women's Day – a global day to recognize and celebrate women’s and girls’ social, economic, cultural, and political achievements - at Reena where our workforce is 50% women, we celebrate this every single day. We are proud to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Reena Group of Companies. We have been privileged and honored to be able to serve so many incredible customers over this 40-year journey. It is because of their faith that we have gained so much experience in the fields that we work in. Over the last 40 years this organization has consumed our family. It has been our passion and love for so many years and remains a platform for the unique expression of our family values: hard work, honesty, sincerity, and a genuine desire to do well for our customers. The company was founded by Dr. Manohar Sood and Mrs. Raminder Sood 40 years ago as a food company and karaya gum washer for use by colostomy patients! Quite a product mix. The founders quickly realized that timing is everything and switched gears into what is now known as the Natural Health Products industry. The contract manufacturing business (Total Health Centre) started with three foundational products: Psyllium Husk Powder, Chlorophyll and Bentonite Liquid. Dr. Sood being a chemist and regulatory pioneer along with his entrepreneurial wife decided they would need to comply with Health Canada’s requirements and shortly started lab operations in 1986 (Canadian Analytical Laboratories). It wasn’t until 1987 when Dr. Sood spun off his regulatory consulting business into a separate entity known as MCS Associates Incorporated. MCS has served many brands over the years and helped craft parts of the current regulatory GMP requirements for Natural Health Products in Canada. Today the three are a part of the Reena Group of Companies that continue to assist brand owners across the world. We and the industry have come a long way in terms of complexity and sophistication. While it pains us to see how current regulations limit innovation and consumer choice, it is our fundamental belief that the industry will prevail. We have been eyewitnesses to the continuous benefits of natural products on the health of Canadians for the last 40 years. Today we are so remarkably proud of the teams that surround us and while we still yearn to improve and learn, we still have much work ahead of us as an organization and an industry. It has been an incredible journey, and as we reflect over the course of the last 40 years, we all have come to the realization that none of this would be possible without the incredible, enduring support of all of our employees both present and past and their spouses and families; the exceptional hard work of our leadership; and of course the foundational privilege of having the best customers an organization could only wish for. It fills us with so much pride that some of our customers today were right there on day one, 40 years ago, to support us by giving us work when nobody knew who we were. To them and all of our customers we are forever in your debt. We thank you for believing in us.
