🖼️🌾 We are excited to report the success of this year’s Virtual Art Saskatchewan program, supported by SaskTel. This joint program between the Mackenzie Art Gallery and Remai Modern provided 1,358 students across the province with 54 transformative learning opportunities. These online art programs inspire creativity, challenge outdated conventions, and foster understanding.    Virtual Art Saskatchewan breaks down barriers by highlighting Indigenous artists from both museums’ public collections. With SaskTel’s support, the MacKenzie and Remai Modern can build meaningful relationships with students across the province through education and open dialogue.   Thank you SaskTel for sponsoring Virtual Art Saskatchewan!   Image credit: David Garneau, Ways of Knowing; Ways of Being, 2003, oil on canvas. “As curators, we’re not here to tell anybody ‘This is what you have to think; this is how you have to engage,’ or that the museum is supposed to be a quiet place where you passively receive knowledge. It’s about creating space for the viewer to figure out how they want to connect to the work.” Michelle Jacques in The StarPhoenix Thank you to Julia Peterson for speaking with Remai Modern’s Chief Curator & Head of Exhibitions/Collections (and to photographer Michelle Berg for the great pics). We are so grateful for the work she is doing at the museum! Photo by Michelle Berg https://lnkd.in/gJaKVHD9

Since opening in October 2017, Remai Modern has contributed more than $100M to the local economy, according to a recent study by the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority (SREDA). The museum has also had a significant positive impact on labour income, job creation, tourism and the local GDP. “At Remai Modern we are fortunate to see the impact the museum makes through the visitors who connect to our exhibitions, the children who discover their creativity through our programs, and the local organizations we partner with to create a greater sense of community. Thanks to this SREDA report, we are grateful to also have quantitative data that supports Remai Modern’s impact on the local economy,” said Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh, Co-Executive Director & CEOs. “We feel privileged to help enhance the quality of life in Saskatoon, to drive tourism and to work near and with local businesses to create a more vibrant city.” Remai Modern also released its 2023 annual report this week, highlighting a year that included doubling the number of visitors over 2022. Announcing a new exhibition opening on May 10! 🎭 How Not to Be Seen features works by a roster of artists from Canada and abroad, including Brook Andrew, Zach Blas, Sandra Brewster, Charles Campbell, Nick Cave, David Garneau, Sondra Perry, Amalia Pica, Hito Steyerl, and Haegue Yang. Visibility in the digital age has become a focal point of investigation. So has its opposite: invisibility. Artists from systematically minoritized and marginalized groups have been at the forefront of modes of thinking and artmaking that explore the latter. The artists in How Not to Be Seen employ strategies either to abstract the self or to use opacity and withdrawal as forms of resistance to these networks of exploitation. From various perspectives and with a range of approaches, these artists all interrupt the expectation that art makes things visible for everyone to see, creating instead new spaces of shelter, protection, and community. Congratulations to Michelle Jacques, Remai Modern’s Director of Exhibitions and Collections/Chief Curator, who was announced as one of this year’s eight winners of the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. These awards are the most prestigious distinctions for artistic merit and outstanding contribution to the visual and media arts in Canada. Nominators Sally Frater, Denise Ryner, and Georgiana Uhlyarik had this to say about her work: “Jacques’s contributions to the field are formative and utterly unique. With unwavering commitment, intelligence, vision, wisdom, and above all poise and generosity of spirit, she is an inspiring role model, mentor, and creative thinker of the highest order. She thinks globally, contextually, and multi-disciplinarily, always embedded in the local and the current with the long view of entangled histories.” Photo: Carey Shaw
