How can you send and receive business calls from your cellphone without revealing your personal cellphone number and name? I use VoIP Session Initiation Protocol software, or VoIP SIP software for short. While working remotely, I make sure I’m accessible by phone. Some of my clients – especially my elderly clients – either don’t have access to the latest communication technologies, or don’t know how to use all of them and find it easier to make a good ol' fashion phone call. One of the key things in a client-centric law firm is to be flexible and meet your clients where they already are in terms of their preference for communication channels, and to not force them to accept your preference. I use Groundwire – a SIP software – to send and receive business calls from my cell phone, so I’m accessible to them while working remotely both abroad and at home. I downloaded the Groundwire App from the Apple store, installed the VoIP SIP software on my cellphone, and integrated a Direct Inward Dialing (DID) number that I purchased from VoIP.ms.  My DID number is my business number. If anyone calls my business number and chooses to leave me a voicemail message, then Groundwire will transcribe their voicemail message and send it along with the audio recording to my email. I can listen to the voicemail message or read the transcript from my email. I can also upload the files to my cloud-based legal software, Clio Manage, and then associate them to the particular client’s matter. 3-weeks ago I delivered a welcoming speech to the hundreds of attendees at the Law Society of Ontario's 18th Solo and Small Firm Conference, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. My message was twofold: 1. We collectively evolve by paying it forward. I was a beneficiary of the thought leaders at the 15th Solo and Small Conference, and I’m repaying the deed to the new attendees of the original benefactor by volunteering my time as a co-chair, speaker and moderator, so they will be further ahead than I was when I first started as a solo practitioner; and 2. It’s imperative for us to consistently keep up with the constant need to change, adapt and evolve in this new, ever-changing and evolving environment, so we don’t we get left behind. I spoke on this topic at the 18th Solo and Small Firm Conference, and found that the subject captured the imagination of a lot of the attendees. So, I decided to explore it more throughly in a vlog series, where I’ll also invite guests to talk about everything from cloud-based legal software, VoIP virtual faxes, artificial intelligence and creating a positive remote experience for your clients, to cloud-based mailing services, VoIP session initiation protocol software, remote digital marketing and portable Wifi hotspots! I started my own law firm during the tail end of the COVID-19 global pandemic, so I had no choice but to set up a virtual, paperless office where I could work remotely from anywhere in the world. I had great time last week at Grapes for Humanity's 7th spring social and charity event "France Uncorked", in the outdoor Glass Pavilion at Casa Loma. It was a special evening of fine French wine, gourmet food, specialty cocktails, a silent auction and music, while supporting their efforts to raise funds for buildOn and Sistema Toronto. The proceeds raised will fund an after school music program for underprivileged children in Toronto, and help to build a school in Malawi Africa.
