Day 5 of the labour disruption at British Columbia's ports. The paralysis of container cargo traffic at terminals across Canada's west coast has severe impacts on Saskatchewan's potash industry. The West Coast ports move >21,000 tonnes of potash daily to overseas customers, and each day of a shutdown will cost the industry $9.7 million daily in lost sales revenue. We call on all parties to find a resolution quickly to prevent the same devastating events we saw during 2023’s port labour disruption. Day 4 of British Columbia's ports labour disruption and no signs of quick resolution. We urge the federal government to pursue immediate action to resolve the labour disruption to prevent further damage to Canada's economy. As a landlocked province, having access to rail and ports to deliver our products to international markets, or deliver inputs from overseas to Saskatchewan mines, is of vital importance to the mining industry in Saskatchewan. Day 3 of the West Coast Ports Labour Disruption. Disruptions to British Columbia's ports has damaging effects on Saskatchewan's mining industry and is very harmful to the Canadian economy. Saskatchewan producers depend on reliable port service and smooth-functioning supply chains to get their products to market. As the labour disruption continues there will be significant impact on potash exports which will negatively affect global food security and Canada's reputation as a reliable trading partner. The Saskatchewan Mining Association calls on the federal government to exercise its power under s.107 of the Canada Labour Code to immediately send the parties involved in the current and unprecedented work stoppage at all BC Ports as well as the Port of Montreal to binding arbitration to secure Canada's industrial peace. It is time for bold and innovative action from the federal government that demonstrates leadership, creates stability and supports the reputation of Canada as a reliable trading nation. As key users and stakeholders of port services, our members are very concerned about the impact these labour disruptions have on their ability to deliver products to overseas markets in a predictable and timely manner. These labour disruptions damage Canada's trading relationships leading to the potential loss of market share to Russia and Belarus. The Saskatchewan Mining Association strongly urges the federal government to pursue swift action to resolve the labour disruption at all BC ports and the Port of Montreal. Our members are deeply concerned by yet another labour disruption in the export supply chain. #Saskatchewan's #potash companies produce over 34% of the world's potash with 95% being exported to the US and 40 overseas markets to help provide global food security.
The labour disruption has begun at the Port of Vancouver. Trains filled with potash stopped moving to the coast over the weekend and the impacts to Saskatchewan’s potash industry are already piling up. We call on the Federal Government – and all parties involved – to find an immediate resolution. We cannot afford for Canadian potash and to be replaced by Russian product in our key markets like we saw during last year’s port strike. Kristin Cuddington, Director of Community and Indigenous Engagement, Cameco Corporation says she enjoys her “dynamic” work with real people and real issues. Her role includes building relationships and working with communities near Cameco’s northern operations, understanding the impact mining has on local communities and how they and Cameco can work together for mutual benefit. “It's really a unique space. And you know, getting to see the impact, and hearing from and really understanding the importance of mining to local communities in a way that remains protective of the environment.” She says Cameco is encouraging women to pursue careers in non-traditional roles and advises other women to take a leap and keep moving forward. “I continue to take opportunities; I continue to walk through doors and I continue to learn new things and grow. “And I would encourage women to do that. Yes, there are a lot of challenges you must overcome, but you should continue to persevere, continue to push forward and you'll be surprised where you can find yourself.” #WomensHistoryMonth #Saskatchewan #mining #inclusion #equality #WomeninMining #careers #uranium #indigenousengagement
