Today is International Equal Pay Day, and as we reflect on the progress made in closing the gender pay gap, we also have to acknowledge the work still ahead. Despite significant strides, women in Canada continue to earn less than men—on average, 84 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. For women facing additional barriers, this gap is even wider. “Women continue to lag behind men in retirement savings and overall lifetime earnings. Addressing the gender pay gap is essential to correcting this economic disparity, along with increasing financial literacy and education, providing women with the financial foundation they need to secure their futures and thrive,” says Dr. Vicki Stronge, who serves on SCWIST’s board of directors and has over 18 years working in the STEM industry. Achieving pay equity requires collaboration from governments, businesses and individuals. By pushing for legislative reforms, ensuring corporate responsibility and empowering women with tools to advocate for themselves, we can move closer to a fair and equitable future. Progress on gender equality is happening, but not fast enough according to the latest United Nations report. "At current rates, gender parity in parliaments remains a distant dream, potentially not achievable until 2063. It will still take a staggering 137 years to lift all women and girls out of poverty. And about 1 in 4 girls continue to be married as children." The report also stresses the astonishing cost of gender inequality. For example, the annual global cost of countries failing to adequately educate their young populations is over USD 10 trillion. "The costs of inaction on gender equality are immense, and the rewards of achieving it are far too great to ignore," said Li Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. The full and equal participation of women and girls in every aspect of society is essential to achieving lasting progress and unlocking our shared potential.
