Global reliability continues to decline and at the same time, delays are getting longer. This means we continue to see more of the global fleet effectively be removed, and it is now almost as bad, as during the initial Red Sea disruption. From a network design perspective, for every weekly deep-sea liner service, one vessel would be scheduled to depart from an origin region each week. However, a shipping line can have multiple vessels departing in the same week, on the same service. We term this phenomenon as “vessel bunching”, and it is defined as the number of sailings in a given week in excess of the number of weekly services. Fortunately, the long-feared strike in the US East Coast ports, ended after just three days of strike. As the strike was quite short-lived, the impact was much less than the worst fears, but nonetheless, the 3-day strike did cause vessels to queue, which will have a negative impact on the availability of capacity in origin regions. The long-announced strike from the ILA union was put into effect on October 1st, as expected. After 3 days, the strike was then ended, as the ILA and the USMX, reached a temporary agreement. The agreement was seemingly firm on salary increase, but also mentioned that other matters were still not resolved, and thus there is a new deadline of January 15th to get those resolved.
