The new 2025 NFPA 1585 Standard for Exposure and Contamination Control officially address Personal Decontamination! The newest Standards for decon offer a great guide to gross decontamination (environment / equipment / gear / PPE), but also - finally - includes some recommendations for personal decontamination (the actual body of the firefighter / individual exposed)! - The new definition of Contamination and Contaminants includes dermal contamination and skin absorption and the ability of toxins to bypass clothing (A.3.3.5. / A.3.3.8.) - Soap and water is stated as the best solution for removing contaminants. A.5.2.4. recommends washing for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. - Recommendation to practice decontamination procedure during training as you would in an incident situation. "No smoke is good smoke. This includes smoke from pallets and hay, which are commonly used in any of the structures defined in NFPA 1403" (A.7.8.) New report released out of British Columbia analyzing 15 years of firefighter fatality data in Canada. "The report pinpoints cancer as the leading cause of firefighter death, making up almost 85 per cent of claims from 2007 to 2021 – nearly double the 43 per cent rate for the general population". “We have seen some changes to policy, practice and equipment over the years to reduce the cancer risk for firefighters and support their mental health, but this new research shows that more must be done to protect their health and wellbeing,” said Brian Godlonton, B.C.’s Fire Commissioner. “It’s important that we continue to analyze firefighter health data to track new trends and respond appropriately, aiming to ensure that firefighters have the protection they require.” Ontario's Fire Protection Grant is a great start here in this province, a promise to contribute $30 million over the next 3 years to underfunded fire departments, with year 1 prioritizing cancer prevention. Researching the risk of birth defects among children of male firefighters. Would love to see the study on children of female firefighters.
I was born with a cleft lip, putting the chances of my daughter having a cleft between 2% and 8% (apparently). Having a firefighter as a father significantly increases that risk. Children with clefts are TWICE as likely to have a firefighter as a father. So are children with a limb defect. Infants born with total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR), a congenital heart defect, are THREE times as likely to have a firefighter as a father. We know firefighters are at a higher risk for many cancers ... did you know their children are as well? This Kitsap Washington study determined children of firefighters were 27.4 TIMES more likely to be diagnosed with cancer than the general population. Not percentage guys - 27 TIMES. The chance of diagnosis among general child population was found to be 0.0179%, whereas the child of a Kitsap County firefighter has a 0.49% chance of being diagnosed with cancer.
