The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw: a unity of the Squamish Peoples with an uplifting culture, rich history, and exciting future.

About us

The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (also known as the Squamish Nation) is a unity of the Squamish Peoples with an uplifting culture, rich history, and exciting future. The Nation is an innovative Indigenous government that uses its resources to provide, guide, and protect the Squamish territory and Squamish People. The Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Stélmexw (Squamish People) continue to reside in the area now described as the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The largest proportion of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Members live in several urban reserve communities in the present-day cities of Vancouver, North and West Vancouver and the municipality of Squamish, B.C. Over 47 per cent of the more than 4,050 Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw Members live on-reserve, and membership is determined by guidelines set out in the Squamish Nation Membership Code. The Nation has never ceded or surrendered title to its lands, rights to its resources or the power to make decisions within its territory.

We all have a role to play in protecting our homes and communities from wildfires. Since 2022, the Squamish Nation has participated in FireSmart, an initiative that supports communities to reduce impacts to their homes, infrastructure, and areas of importance. The FireSmart team helps to protect our communities at risk of forest fires by pruning trees, clearing out dead vegetation, creating firebreaks, and more. To learn more about this important work, check out this video.

Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw holds Indigenous Rights and Title on the lands and waters within our territory and has the authority to make decisions about how to govern and manage land use activities. External stakeholders must consult with the Nation on any potential projects or activities that may affect Rights and Title. These consultation requests are submitted through SquamishConnect.com, the Nation’s online referrals portal. ✅One role of the Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ (Rights & Title) department is to evaluate the requests and ensure that Squamish interests in the territory are being protected. Each referral is carefully evaluated through multiple perspectives to make sure that all the Nation’s considerations and requirements are met. The Nation’s consent must be granted before any proposed activities in the territory can take place. 🎥To learn more about the referral process, and Squamish Connect, check out this video!

🌈 We're excited to share key findings from our recent report on the Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, and additional sexual orientations and gender identities (2SLGBTQIA+) Inclusion Initiative within the Squamish Nation. A key theme across all challenges is that colonization is at the root of 2SLGBTQIA+ challenges for Squamish People. Understanding this allows us to advance the work to ensure Squamish Nation is more supportive and inclusive of gender and sexual diversity today and for generations to come. ℹ️ Join us in addressing identified issues and creating a more inclusive community for all. Find our findings and recommendations at https://lnkd.in/d78W77VM.
