October is the beginning of viral season, and along with influenza and COVID-19, RSV continues to impact vulnerable groups. Infants and those who are pregnant as the colder months begin are among those most vulnerable. This year, there are new ways to protect these individuals from the harms of RSV. Caring for people who are unhoused is a core part of the mission at Unity Health Toronto—a value that informs research, education, outreach and clinical care. Today, on World Homeless Day, take a look at some of the network's recent research and outreach on homelessness. Homelessness is associated with substantial excess health care costs, according to new research led by Lucie Richard & Dr. Stephen Hwang, researchers at St. Michael's Hospital's MAP Centre for Urban Health Solutions. Homelessness is a key contributor to that low lifespan. "This experience has definitely allowed me to grow as a professional and as a person." This month, 22 staff members concluded our first-ever equity-based mentorship program. The Leadership and Organizational Development team created this initiative to prioritize the recruitment and selection of mentors and mentees who self-identify as belonging to communities who have historically experienced and continue to experience barriers in leadership, including Black, Indigenous and racialized people, 2SLGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities. The St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto Paediatrics team is celebrating a milestone anniversary this year: 75 years of providing the best care experiences to young patients! In 1949, St. Joseph’s was home to the first paediatric unit outside of SickKids in the city. It has since grown to include paediatric inpatient surgical and medical care, outpatient general paediatric and specialist consultations, neonatal follow-ups, neonatal intensive care, and sick visits through the CIBC Just For Kids Urgent Care Clinic, which sees more than 100 patients daily during respiratory illness season. This fall, the Nunavut government will be providing RSV vaccinations to all babies. This welcome news comes after Dr. Anna Banerji, pediatric infectious diseases specialist at Unity Health Toronto, has advocated for the change for decades. The Canadian Press https://lnkd.in/ghX3YNqq
