Good morning and happy Monday 🌞 this is your weekly reminder that decolonization is not only the work of Indigenous folks; it is work that requires us all to show up for. We regularly reference this amazing TEDx talk by Nikki Sanchez-Hood in our circles and workshops. If you haven't watched it yet, please take 13 minutes and 18 seconds out of your day to do so. After watching it, we'd love to hear: what's one thing you've taken away from this?

This summer, we launched a new series on our Edgerunners blog: "A Reading List for Regenerative Business Leaders." Each month, one of our thoughtful team members shares and recommends a book that has provided them with new learnings in the discourse of regenerative business practices and ecological economics. Our latest feature highlights Hilary Henegar's reflections on My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Mending of Our Bodies and Hearts by Resmaa Menakem. This book explores how racial trauma is stored in the body and provides somatic practices for healing and transformation. We've also featured Renee Mitchell's August pick, Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey, and Saj Singh's July pick, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. As an American and a White person, a key theme in my self-development has been recognizing where privilege shows up in my life – and taking responsibility for it. From ages 12 to 18, I was a minority in my Indianapolis school and neighbourhood, surrounded mostly by Black folks. Violence was everywhere around me, including police violence, yet I myself was safe. I had a sort of inner knowing that I was untouchable in my White skin. I was deeply aware of the systemic racism that privileged me, and at times took action as an ally, but I couldn’t identify the racism within myself until more recently. Several years ago, I joined an anti-racist affinity group through the #SocialVentureInstitute (SVI) community. Meeting monthly on Zoom with three other White women, we aimed to unpack what it means to be an anti-racist in business - and to get honest with ourselves in the process. Our discussions led us to Resmaa Menakem’s groundbreaking book, My Grandmother’s Hands, which explores the deep-rooted racial trauma in American society and how it manifests in Black, White, and “blue” bodies (aka law enforcement). Through personal stories, historical context, and body-centred practices, the book guides readers on a healing journey of “somatic abolitionism”, offering strategies to get present with our bodies in order to release generational trauma and liberate ourselves from the influence of White body supremacy. Each month, through breath work, body scans and other mind-body practices, our group confronted and began to dissolve the layers of fear and bias ingrained in us by a culture shaped by racism, colonization, patriarchy, and ableism, while also acknowledging the lineage of trauma survivors from which we descend. We named our blockers. We came up against our fragility. We forgave our ancestors. We got real. Doing this work is slow, uncomfortable, and nonlinear, but Resmaa’s book offered steady, compassionate guidance. And I found that each practice opened new pathways for living authentically and responsibly, revealing shame more transparently, and fostering a newfound sense of freedom and connection with others. I still have a lifetime of unlearning ahead, but I feel well-resourced by the practices and insights I learned from this book. I highly recommend joining up with others to read, digest and practice My Grandmother’s Hands in community, for that is where we truly heal. Here's a link to buy your copy - which I recommend over borrowing from the library, as it's the kind of book you want to move through slowly/repeatedly: https://lnkd.in/gTC-BM6G [I wrote this book review as part of a collaborative series by Tandem Innovation Group Inc. Each month we feature a "Book Pick for Regenerative Business Leaders" selected by a team member. Find others here: https://lnkd.in/gsA2GC3H]

  • Our full embrace of matriarchal leadership has led to many (un)learnings within our team. By shedding toxic leadership norms we’ve been conditioned to, like the notion that vulnerability = weakness, we’ve developed a workplace that’s rich with real connection and understanding. This approach invites us to show up as we are and bring our fullest selves to work every day - all of our emotions, opinions, thoughts, and experiences, the things that make us who we are. We’re excited by this shift and invite you to explore the principles and practice of matriarchal leadership, and how your team could also benefit from this approach: https://lnkd.in/e_npnmY9

Hello! It’s Tania Lo and Renee Mitchell here, with the next chapter in our story of transition (which started here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gW6syciM). Today, we want to introduce you to what we're calling Tandem's New Era: a new business model and a renewed focus on impact and wellbeing. Tandem’s New Era is more intimate. Over the summer, we transitioned to an in-house model of service. Our team now comprises of 33 employees, and a handful of contract specialists, servicing clients in our expanded core service areas: > Leadership & Co-Creation > People & Culture > Strategy & Operations > Finance & Accounting The new model enables us to go deeper with clients, giving us more bandwidth to nurture those relationships. It also enables us to pay our staff better, offer benefits, and provide them with the focused professional development and training they’ve been asking for to support their individual and collective journeys to decolonize and unlearn. You can read the full story of how we got here on our blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/gu6UuHPk. But if there's one thing we want to communicate about our new era it's that we have a deeper focus on People & Culture, which we’re weaving into the fabric of our work with clients. Work culture matters. How we treat each other matters. We believe every business must prioritize equity, diversity and inclusion – not as a check-box activity, but as a living, breathing practice, girded by policies that prioritize our wellbeing. The invitation is to examine how each of us is enabling or disabling harm at every level of our organization, perpetuating or dismantling colonial thinking, and living forward into an ecological economy, where businesses act as communities, leaders serve as stewards, and each of us feels uplifted by a deep sense of belonging and responsibility. That’s our vision. We’re here to nurture businesses that nourish people and planet. And we’re privileged to do this work with a re-energized team that together has embarked on a new era of collaboration with each other and with our clients. Get to know these kind, passionate folks on our newly refreshed website 👉 https://lnkd.in/g4-xpru And reach out if you’d like to explore how Tandem’s holistic approach can open up new possibilities for profitability, impact and wellbeing in this “New Era”. #TandemNewEra
