Aligning your capital with your mission is critical for the long-term sustainability of your organization. Social Finance, often interchangeable with impact investing, is one such way. With the right resources, guidance, and plan, social finance can provide capital diversification that enables maximum impact while improving your social enterprise’s financial sustainability. Andrew Greer from Purppl and Thrive Impact Fund and Keri Sanderman from Community Futures East Kootenay recently led a workshop on social finance fundamentals for social enterprises. Read through the reflections and main takeaways shared by workshop participants, along with insights on how to lead your organization in a strategic shift that embraces the social enterprise model through social finance, and navigate the complexities of understanding all the various instruments available. Andrew and Keri’s workshop was shared with a roomful of social entrepreneurs convened for a series of peer roundtables, in partnership with Community Futures of East Kootenays and ETSI-BC (Economic Trust of the Southern Interior). Each session brings together 19 social entrepreneurs and a guest speaker to learn and connect, after which the resources are shared on Community Futures of East Kootenays’s website: https://lnkd.in/gF2ruDDK  Click that link to find the full presentation (plus additional resources from Future of Good), and reach out to the Purppl team if you’re seeking a partner in exploring social finance for your organization or would like to bring this workshop to your community. If your organization is weighing options for funding the acquisition of assets, such as property or equipment, to expand services and impact for the community, reach out to our team to explore which social finance tools might support your goals. #SocialEnterprises #Community #SocialFinance

Today we’re celebrating the launch of Buy Social Canada's updated Guide to Social Enterprise! 🙌 Offering a holistic view of the social economy and the life stages of a social enterprise, the guide offers many practical examples of social enterprises activating diverse forms of capital (social, financial, cultural, etc) to thrive and build impact, and situates today's social entrepreneurs within the context of the long history and lineage of Indigenous entrepreneurs who've exchanged for mutual benefit and healthy, connected communities since time out of mind. We are delighted to have been able to contribute toward the collective effort of building this phenomenal resource, with content on Social Finance and Impact Measurement. Social finance is growing, and that’s exciting. But it’s also a critical time to make sure it stays true to its purpose: advancing the work of the social sector. That’s why we’re co-owners with Scale Collaborative on the Thrive Impact Fund which is specifically structured to support social enterprise and nonprofits. It’s also why we participate in national communities of practice that lobby for important shifts to the social finance ecosystem. And we We’re sharing this because we want to keep the conversation going about how social finance can truly serve our communities. What initiatives are you seeing and participating in to advance access by social impact organizations to capital that is fair, friendly and accessible? This is the second in a series of reflections and responses from our 2023 Impact Report, which we are sharing as an open invitation to join us in building social impact together. At Purppl, we’re always learning—about ourselves, our work, and the world around us. As is the Purppl way, we have a regular practice of reflecting on what’s working and where we need to grow. In our 2023 Impact Report, we share those reflections with you, along with the steps we’re taking to keep moving forward. Consider these reflections an open invitation to join us in building something better together. We hope you’ll walk with us on this journey. Here’s our first reflection: Relationships are a primary ingredient in system change. All good outcomes are done together, not alone. And our response: We work with, not for. We’re investing deeply in relationships. We’re bridging, convening, and connecting to help others build and deepen relationships. We’re prioritizing relationships that amplify Indigenous folks, women+, and climate solutions. How have strong relationships enabled, advanced or sweetened your organization’s impact? This is the first in a series, based on our reflections and responses in the 2023 Impact Report: https://hubs.la/Q02MFJPB0 #LearningTogether #SystemChange #socialimpact

“Moving beyond my own personal challenges inspired my belief in the power of resiliency and the desire to help others move into the fullness of their own life,” says Roxie Winzer-Van Aller, Executive Director at Connect Counselling & Therapy Society: Central Okanagan as well as a Purppl client and collaborator. As a social impact leader with a passion for justice, equality, and sustainability, Roxie is committed to inspiring and empowering individuals and communities through thoughtful solutions that foster social, environmental, and economic change. “It’s about creating a more inclusive and thriving world for all.” Her organization, Connect, provides affordable, high quality, non-crisis care to improve the mental health of its diverse clients, their families and their communities. Through compassionate, innovative and accessible care, they are breaking down barriers to mental health services in the Central Okanagan. Connect reduces barriers by providing both in-person and Telehealth services, sometimes at no-cost to the client (off-set by the revenue from those who are able to pay). But addressing the stigma and discrimination that often surround mental health issues is also critical. By promoting understanding and acceptance through education and advocacy, she and her team are helping to shift culture, where seeking help is normalized and accessible for everyone. The organization also does work to advocate for policies that provide funding and support for mental health services. If she were a politician, Roxie says she would hire a nonprofit ED to oversee the finances. “Those of us who work in this space really know how to stretch a dollar,” she says. “We know where best to spend the money for the greatest impact and are insightful on the issues.” Roxie’s dedication to building a better world was inspired by her late father. “At his funeral, my daughter articulated that the gift he gave us as a family is the ‘knowing’ that we are stronger than we think, and that kind people make the world a better place,” shares Roxie. “I see this every day not only in my family but in the team I work with at Connect!” As for her own legacy, she says, "I want people to remember not what I did, but how I made them feel." Learn more about Roxie and her team at Connect Counselling & Therapy: https://hubs.ly/Q02M8dbJ0 This post is part of our ongoing series, "Purposeful People," where we spotlight the incredible individuals working within the social economy, like Roxie Van Aller. Stay tuned for more stories that honour their dedication to social change and inspire others to take part in building a just, regenerative economy.

Purppl friend, alumni client and partner Hollyhock Leadership Institute is hosting their annual Social Venture Institute next month, and we wanted to make sure folks in our network know about this transformative gathering. This is your chance to connect human-to-human, heart-to-heart with other impact leaders and social entrepreneurs to build skills and relationships – and restore. (Because Capitalism. Because Patriarchy. Because structural racism. Also just because.) SVI takes place on the traditional lands of the Klahoose, Tla’amin, and Homalco Nations, on Cortez Island, and we can share from experience that it is a magical place indeed - a place where people have been gathering for rest and healing for millennia.  Hilary Henegar from our team will join (again) this year - facilitating a workshop on "Aligning Impact and Storytelling: How to Use Your Theory of Change for Strategic Marketing & Communications". She shares: "This year I was even more keen than usual to join when I learned that one of my great heroes, Resmaa Menakem, will be there teaching a workshop on Somatic Abolitionism. Then I learned that several exciting Indigenous leaders will be joining as well, including Squamish councilor Khelsilem T., Nuqo Modular CEO Rory Richards and Hillory Tenute!" Find the full lineup of speakers, workshop presenters and facilitators: https://lnkd.in/gTHAMgDm And do consider joining! "Yes, it is a big commitment," says Hilary, "and yes, it is worth it. YOU are worth it." UPDATE! Purppl Entrepreneur In Residence Amy Moroni will also be there this year - in fact, it was at SVI last year that Jude Brunt became connected with Amy, which was the spark that led to her joining our EIR team! #SocialVentureInstitute #socialenterprise #socialentrepreneurship #socialimpact #socialpurpose #businessforgood
