Direct Pipe® combines the advantages of microtunneling and HDD technology, installing prefabricated pipelines and excavating boreholes in a single pass. This versatile methodology offers a reduced environmental footprint, a high degree of steering accuracy, and real-time annular pressure adjustments to overcome a wide range of technical challenges and ground conditions — even solid rock. To learn more about Direct Pipe® technology, come visit our team at the NASTT 2025 No-Dig Show at booth 1029!

For trenchless projects with hard ground conditions, our crews often turn to the Geonex Down the Hole Hammer (DTH) system. This piece of equipment can break through cobbles, boulders, and even solid rock, allowing us to complete installations through otherwise-impenetrable subsurface conditions. Here's how it works: ▪️We start by attaching the pneumatic hammer to the inside edge of the casing, which breaks any solid rock or boulders into small fragments. ▪️The drill bit pulls the steel casing through the borehole while the casing provides structural support. ▪️Throughout the installation, spoil moves through the hammer, into the casing, and is removed by airway augers. With its combination of strength, precision, and speed, the Geonex system is an essential piece of The Crossing Group's fleet.

Direct Pipe® is an innovative trenchless methodology that combines the advantages of microtunneling and horizontal directional drilling. It allows our crews to install prefabricated pipelines and excavate boreholes in a single pass with speed and accuracy. Our Direct Pipe® explainer video takes you on a trip to a project site, showing some of the unique features and benefits associated with this versatile technology. Stay tuned until the end of the video for an overview of the "two pass method," which allows for the installation of smaller-diameter pipelines that are otherwise well-suited for the Direct Pipe® method.

The Crossing Company is hard at work in northern Alberta! Our onsite crews recently completed a 1,770 m (5,807 ft) HDD intersect in Saddle Hills County as part of a 16-inch water line installation. We then used a 24-inch reamer to enlarge the pilot hole, making way for the new pipe. Great work from our talented team on another safe and efficient HDD project 👏

Last year, The Tunneling Company successfully installed 36-inch steel casing beneath a busy road in Edmonton! This crossing utilized guided auger bore technology, and was a key step in the installation of a water line through the area. Our expert crews and versatile equipment reached an impressive distance of 111 meters, while safely maneuvering beneath the existing infrastructure.

At first glance, this HDD bore may seem relatively standard... but it has achieved "legendary status" within The HDD Company 🏆 Onsite crews drilled 1,800 ft in a single shift (900 feet from nothing, unspun, moved over, and another 900 feet) setting a record for our ongoing project in New York State. This incredible feat was the result of a unique wireless steering tool and non-stop coordination between each crew member. To achieve this level of efficiency, every step had to be completed with the utmost precision — whether completing basket changes or dialing in equipment. Most importantly, it required a team-wide prioritization of safety, ensuring the pace of work always remained secondary to protecting ourselves, our coworkers, and the communities where we work. Outstanding work by everyone who made this feat possible!

While completing trenchless installations in New York State, it's no surprise that our team at The HDD Company encountered a wide range of urban environments. This crossing was located just 45 minutes from the heart of New York City, which introduced unique challenges relating to traffic and infrastructure. In addition to the usual complexities of urban work, the exit point of this installation was located in the middle of a busy intersection. To minimize disruption to the surrounding community, our crews conducted all drilling activities from the entry point, completing as much work as possible without entering the roadway. In the final stages of the crossing, they positioned the rig in the intersection to finish the bore and install the pipeline before quickly demobilizing. The HDD Company successfully installed two bores in this location to a distance of 1,448 feet — all while significantly reducing the impact of their work on nearby residents. Their exceptional skill and expertise makes even the toughest crossings possible!
