October is a great month for stargazing. Aside from the cooler temperatures and earlier sunsets, we have at least one reasonably-bright comet expected, and quite possibly two! The planets rise early enough to see before midnight, and the most distant object visible to the unaided eye comes into view. Find out what to watch for in the night sky in Planetarium Astronomer Scott Young's recent blog: https://ow.ly/BwLM50TK2xI Image: C. Messier via Wikipedia

Sometimes when Dr. Diana Bizecki Robson goes out in the field to research the wild plants growing throughout Manitoba, she encounters species that she can't identify without the equipment in the lab. In this video, find out how she transports these specimens back to the Museum and what work goes into identifying them and adding them to the collection! See some of the Museum's herbarium collection in our online exhibit at PrairiePollination.ca

This historic collection of bird eggs was collected by a young boy who accompanied his grandfather on adventuresome ‘collection trips’ in the late 1930s to the early 1940s in areas around Winnipeg. At this time, egg collecting was considered a popular activity by both researchers and amateur naturalists, and it was still legal to do so. Today, migratory birds, their nests, and eggs are strictly protected, making their collection illegal, which makes the donation of these types of collections to the Manitoba Museum invaluable for their research purposes. Cynthia Boehm is a practicing expert in the beadwork and embroidery patterns of her Cree-Métis ancestors. Her work is not only reflective of her desire to create beautiful pieces but also to honour her grandmother and her community members, whose work continues to be a source of pride and love. Join us for an Artist Talk on Sunday, October 27 that will span generations, celebrating the work of Boehm’s great-grandmother and other historical bead-workers, whose skill and artistry rivaled that of “masters” in any art form globally.
