“If there is a bottom line to the final chapter, and to the book itself, it’s that neoliberalism isn’t going anywhere soon. Neoliberalism continues to permeate the walls of community centres, playgrounds, food banks, and health centres. It’s the leading edge of the ongoing capitalization and colonialization of space, both public and private. The non-profit sector is both buffeted by these forces and held firm by the belief in a more just and equitable society for all.” Book review by Peter R. Elson on “The Canadian Non-Profit Sector: Neoliberalism and the Assault on Community,” by Ted Richmond and John Shields. https://lnkd.in/d6FgFdsx

“When journalism is done at its best, we’re a proxy for the public. We are here to be asking questions on their behalf. And so, if they’re not there with us as we fight for our lives in some cases, then we’re not doing our jobs right.” In today’s “survival-of-the-nimblest” journalism industry, an October summit organized by media advocacy group Press Forward aims to get people excited about journalism and the future of community-centred media in Canada. https://lnkd.in/evcAib4e Coverage by Angela Long Interviews: Andrea Houston at Ricochet Media and Press Forward Canada, Vicky Mochama at Press Forward and The Resolve, Tai Huynh at The Local Mentions: Michener Prize The Sprawl Lela Savic IndigiNews Investigative Journalism Foundation The Green Line The Coast The Discourse Rasmus Kleis Nielsen Jeanette Ageson The Tyee Linda Solomon Wood Canada's National Observer Emma Gilchrist The Narwhal Inspirit Foundation

“There is a big question as to whether this will move forward, but it’s rare to find opportunities like this when we can explore an innovative idea.” The founder of a charity that promotes greater giving in Canada has proposed a mandatory “Social Sector Grant” to build capacity and impact. Is it the type of shake-up the sector needs or the scheming of someone who does not understand how the sector operates? "The new Global South foundations have opportunities to leapfrog over the philanthropic sectors of the Global North with their partnerships and their digital and financial tools." Two new books explore post-pandemic developments in organized philanthropy across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. They argue the merits of a new approach to philanthropy in these regions, more strongly focused on partnerships, networks, and innovation to create more impact. Hilary Pearson reviews: Reimagining Philanthropy in the Global South: From Analysis to Action in a Post-COVID World, edited by Clare Woodcraft, Kamal Munir, and Dr Nitya Mohan Khemka. On Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th, 2021, One Day's Pay launched a grassroots campaign to mobilize settlers and non-Indigenous Canadians to meaningfully recognize the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, and to honour their survivors, their families and communities. Over the past three years, people across the country responded to One Day’s Pay's invitation to meaningfully act: raising close to $750,000 dollars for Indigenous led projects, movements, organizations and nations. As we mark our fourth year in partnership with the ODP Campaign, The Circle team is inviting our peers to support us in surpassing the one million dollar mark!
September 30th is about more than reflection, it's about action. Whether it’s through supporting Indigenous-led organizations or deepening your understanding of the land you live on, each of us has a role to play in reconciliation. Start by educating yourself, donating One Day’s Pay, and committing to lasting change. What steps will you take? Share them with your friends to spread the message of action. Let’s turn knowledge into action.
