Update from SIU Canada’s Women’s Representative, Nadia Pecoraro, on Anti-Harassment Efforts In February 2024, the Seafarers’ International Union of Canada published a report on an in-house study conducted to gauge the issue and severity of workplace harassment, sexual harassment and bullying taking place on board SIU-crewed vessels. While the report pointed to some serious areas of concern and highlighted the need for more attention to be paid to preventing instances of harassment in the future, the response to the report from the SIU Canada membership was overwhelming. Since the publishing of our report on harassment, we have seen many more members coming forward to speak about their experience with harassment on board. I have spoken to many female SIU members personally in my role as the union’s Women’s Representative about issues they have faced in the past and ongoing issues related to harassment. We have seen a major increase in the amount of open and honest dialogue taking place regarding issues of harassment, not just by our female members, but our male members as well, with more and more instances being brought to the attention of SIU Canada representatives in our Halls across the country. While workplace harassment disproportionately impacts women, men are also subjected to harassment regularly. We are happy that our report was able to encourage and promote more discussion and awareness about workplace harassment and what we can all do to create a safer work environment on board our ships. We are seeing a marked decrease in the stigma of talking openly about workplace harassment and this is one of the first steps we were hoping to see in our efforts to end harassment on board... Happy International Day of the Seafarer! The International Maritime Organization theme for Day of the Seafarer 2024 is safety. The SIU Canada has long been a strong advocate for safety at sea, and it is critical that all SIU Canada members take the necessary safety precautions while on the job. At the end of our time on board, we all want to go home safe and healthy to our families. That’s why it is important that you look out for your fellow crewmates on board and ensure that safety is always top of mind. In celebration of Day of the Seafarer 2024, the SIU Canada wants to share 9 safety tips to keep you and your seafarer crewmates safe on the job. #DayoftheSeafarer #DayoftheSeafarer2024 #SafetyTipsAtSea https://lnkd.in/gXiiKmTf

If you or one of your crewmates are experiencing a mental health crisis, it is important that you know that resources are available to help. In addition to the Employee Assistance Programs offered by your employers, there are free hotlines offered both federally and provincially to help you in the event of a mental health crisis. Considering the recent data collected by our survey on the topic of workplace harassment, the impact that harassment has on the mental health of the victims of workplace harassment is substantial. We wanted to share a list of hotlines to help those who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. Harassment has no place in our Union, and those who are unfortunate enough to experience it deserve help. Take care of your mental health.
