Beavers are not only absolutely adorable, but are also a key species in freshwater ecosystem preservation and restoration! Beaver damns reduce soil erosion, provide habitats, retain sediment and help filter heavy metals and pesticides and fertilizers. "Unfortunately beavers are often viewed as a nuisance and have been hunted and trapped extensively in many areas. Due to over hunting as well as pollution and habitat loss the animals are almost gone in some of their original habitats. Scientists are understanding the critical role beavers play especially with the increased amount of wild fires in recent years. The beavers engineer natural fire breaks and help control fires. "Marram grass grows on the unique red sand dunes found along the coast of Prince Edward Island, Canada. Marram grass is very fragile (it can easily be trampled by just a few footsteps) and helps anchor the sand in place, in turn protecting the future of these large, constantly moving coastal dunes that act as natural barriers against storms. Marram grasses eventually pave the way for other species of plants to grow by stabilizing and adding nutrients to the soil." Juvenile salmon savers to the rescue!   With the rise in climate change and altered freshwater habitats, river levels drop during the late spring and summer months.   As the rivers dry up, young salmon and trout become trapped in isolated pools, where they experience a lack of oxygen, increased temperatures, limited food, and susceptibility to predators.   The reddfishrestoration team walks along the rivers, using nets and buckets to capture the young fish. Coastal biodiversity: Tidal pools of the Pacific Rim 🐚🦀 These mini-ecosystems are full of life.⁠ ⁠ "In the Discovery Islands of British Columbia, strong tidal currents and unique underwater topography create localized rapids and zones of upwelling, where Hake (a fish in the cod family) get rapidly forced to the surface of the water, leading to a Bald Eagle feeding frenzy! This phenomenon is the focus of my June/July Bald Eagle photography workshops, although we also spend time with a multitude of marine wildlife species found in the region. The strongest tides that create this feeding frenzy happen irregularly throughout the season and at a slightly different time each day, so how the eagles know exactly when to show up to fish is a bit of a mystery to me. The Western Painted turtle is British Columbia's last remaining native pond turtle that was listed as endangered in Canada due to anthropogenic impacts such as habitat loss and road mortality. In 2016, the painted turtle's conservation status was re-evaluated and listed as threatened as opposed to endangered.
